The Basic Repair Process

The Basic Repair Process

Auto body and paint repairs are typically broken into 3 different procedures and move in the direction shown in the chart below:

Bodywork ->

Preparation ->

Paint/Spraying

Rust Repairs

Welding

Structural Repairs

Parts Replacements

Dent Repairs

Plastic Repairs

Teardown & Trim Removal

Feathering

Backsanding

Priming

Check Blocking

Final Sanding/Scuffing

Masking

Plastic Cleaning/Scuffing

Applying Plastic Primers

Applying Non-Sanding Sealers

Applying Base Coat

Applying Clear Coat

Not shown in the chart would be the final detailing that may include color sanding and polishing. If the paint has minor defects such as dirt nibs or runs, polishing is the process used to remove them.

Cleaning Procedures:

The vehicles need to be repeatedly cleaned throughout the repair process. You should wash the vehicle with soap and water and treat the panels you are working on with a wax and silicone remover. If the vehicle shows signs of a high silicone wax you should treat the other panels with the wax and silicone remove also as it can become airborne and contaminate your paint. Every effort to eliminate sources of silicone will help to ensure a contaminate free paint job.

Depending on what paint line your working with the cleaner recommendations can vary slightly so you should consult your paint manufacturer for their recommendations. We will try to provide some examples of approved cleaners throughout this course.

Safety

Please be aware that nearly all products used in auto body repair can have negative impacts on your health. Always check the MSDS for safe handling recommendations. Generally for sanding you should be wearing a dust mask. When spraying products you should be wearing a full face shield, gloves and a paint suit. Many products contain isocynates that can enter through your eyes and skin. (usually if the product has a hardener it produces isocynates).
