I dont think they usually spray anything on new parts here, they scuff and shoot. I think I am going to start spraying a sealer first.

I hit the boss up this weekend about picking me up a fresh air breathing system too. Not going to be an easy task to get these guys into more modern practices since they hired this old school guy.
Sounds like this shop does not know, or ignores proper procedures. You’re not supposed to base directly over e-coat. How modern is breathing clean air? We had a fresh air system in ’86.

The problem is they have been basing over e-coating, and not having any comebacks, so it will be difficult to tell them you do need it. Im just going to do it….like it or not.

And I have to tell the old timer to put his worn out mask on all the time when he goes in to spray, there is no way he will want something combersome like fresh air to drag around. If the boss wont buy one for me, I will do it myself. I have a family and dont really want to die.

It is pretty simple,if you guys are a highend resto/collision shop with a paint system YOU and the OLDGUY are required to be certified by your paint company for a warranty.I am shocked that a rep has not been in to talk to you guys, you should have a waranty in place and if you don’t follow standard operating procedrures how can they offer a warranty :deadhorse People say all the time I have done it like this for years with no problems :wak Honestly how do you know have you seen the vehicles after 5-10-20 years? If you base over ecoat and your roads are good sure you can get away with it,but travel gravel roads or be in the snow belt your new parts will be peppered with rock chips and peeling in 3 months.

Talk to your rep about an application course, you will be amazed what you will learn.Ask your boss about what kind of warranty your shop has in place(if any)It sounds like everybody in your shop needs to get on the same page.Maybe thats why the old guy is so fast due to cutting corners

Yeah Jayson i really dont know if/how they warranty anything. These are all used cars that they either are selling, or have sold and the buyer has specified they wanted certain things repaired. Of course when we do the restorations, things are done differently. I will definately be calling the rep and seeing about a course.

And yes, im sure cutting corners helps him, but the dude is simply fast with bodywork. He pulled a bumper cover off of a Nissan 370Z today and within minutes, had a heat lamp on it, the dent straightned out, had it filled, and sanded. Usually he does the bodywork so fast I dont even see him doing it. Bad thing is, im not that fast, so he is up my ass all the time about going faster. Then I end up making stupid little mistakes.

Sounds like my old shop I left on a couple cars I scuffed up the e coat then just shot base and cleared it. I didn’t like it told him this isn’t right but he told me its his shop his rules etc and we were using basf products
