I posted about making these a few years ago and as far as I know I was the first to do so,great that someone had the ingenuity to use a those cheap drills as the foundation for a hand held unit ,At the time i was looking for the correct light spectrum to use in a he airbrush studio ,these are being used for photography and where being recommended on such forums ,I then made the leap to use them as sunguns ,the 3M version being a total rip off like a lot of the technology sold to bodyshops by such companies

I’ve been using this one for a while http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/infratech-color-matcher-light-system-cm5300-p-14231.aspx
Works great, its alot cheaper than the 3m one, which I own as well. I stopped buying parts for it, it was ridiculous. 100 dollar batteries, 50 light bulbs, and then when you really need it in a pinch THE BATTERY IS DEAD!
When my last battery took a shit, i found this one, and my jobber sold it to me for 160. It has two light bulbs as well, covering a larger surface area like if you want to check the blend on a hood or something.

The only thing I didn’t like about that one is that you would need to bring electricity in the booth. Also the battery for the 3M Sungun can be rebuilt for a lot less than buying a new one.

I bought a home built sun gun off ebay they used a cheap drill and put the same bulb that the 3m one uses ! Had it about a year its used every day and cost £60 ! Bargain!

I find this whole idea very interesting and am tempted to make one just for fun.I can get the drill at the local walmart for cheap. So what about the connector/socket to plug the light in and where can I find the bulb?Does it have to be a solux or can I find a true daylight bulb at home depot or other place???Thanks

Im sure you can get them direct from solux i think it was paul that wrote that on another forum ?
The ebay one i got has been properly soldered so no nasty scotch locks or connectors ! Im sure the bulbs are about £24 in uk and europe ?

Yeah thanks,Im in Canada so if I can’t find the stuff locally it won’t be worth it.I can just imagine what my supplier would want for a repalcement bulb from 3m :stoned

The guy that does them uses same bulb as 3m do and he says he can supply bulbs easily so must be ready available ?

I followed a guide and made one a couple months ago. I didn’t use the solux bulb just a normal light corrective bulb which are really cheap and it works very well. Maybe not as good as the correct bulb but I couldn’t get one locally at the time. It cost me about £30 to do and took about an hour so can’t complain. It does the job.
