Just my take but I would do it for $4000 if that was all that the guy is willing to pay. Try to get more (6k give or take), but the truth is that a 95 suburban is most likely not work $4000 to start with.
Tell the guy that the price ($4000 or higher if he goes for it) includes painting the jambs and exterior. Any and I mean ANY body work (scratches, dings, anything) will be billed at $45 (or whatever amount that works for you) per hour.
You could get all the materials for around $800. Use the SPI Euro clear that everyone raves about. And 6 or so quarts of base should do it. Get a lower end base, that color should cover pretty well.
Any disassembling that is needed (keep the R and R’ing to a minimum, remember its a cheap job!) should be easy, the gm trucks are a piece of cake.
On this vehicle you wont have to nib or buff the roof, and spend some time getting the garage ready and clean and then you can most likely get away with not sanding/buffing the sides either. so sand/buff the hood and spot nib/buff here and there and your done.
If you can get the job in and out in 3 weeks or so you are doing quite well as a side job kind of deal.
I think you should give him 3 prices and explain each one to him. For example $5000 I’ll do a color change, spray jams, under hood lift gate all the normal places but I won’t take that much stuff off to paint it. I’ll tape up most of the stuff and it won’t be as detailed.
For $6000 I’ll take the time to take things off, sand/clean underneath them do things right. But, there may be some orange peel here/there.
For $7000 I’ll do all this and wetsand/buff the entire truck when finished and I’ll give you a Han detail. He’ll probably ask, “what’s a Han detail” just tell him, “Trust me it’s good and will take hours” lol

April 8, 2009 at 6:06 pm #13891I somehow managed to get the rest of the week off from Ford so I wont see the guy until Sunday or Monday night, but I really dig all the info you guys have posted up..
Ryan I will look for a young whipersnapper who wants to make some cash.. If I cant find one and your helper is down for the extra cash then I will give you a call bro.. I have your number :cheer:
April 9, 2009 at 5:47 am #13901Well bondoking, I’d probably ask the guy for $6500 bucks, then I’d sublet it to you for $4500. But seriously, that has been whats always killed me about the body biz. I could have a multi-million dollar facility, and the insurance industry would not want to pay more than $44 bucks an hour, or, I could string a tarp between two trees, and get the same.
There is no way I could sit here and tell you what you are worth. If they jump on the price like a hobo on a ham sandwich, you are probably not charging enough. If you are sitting around twit ling your thumbs, you are probably charging too much.
I like to call that “free market”. But, don’t worry, if Obama has his way he’s gonna fix that for ya. Or, at the very least, fire you.

April 9, 2009 at 9:06 am #13903I will let you all know how it turns out..
Perhaps I was not clear in my first post.. I never told the owner I wold do the truck for only 4 g’s, I told him I would not even consider touching it for anything less than 4 g’s.. I also told him I would have to crunch numbers see what materials would cost etc etc..
I understand what you all are saying though,.,. In that whatever number they hear fist is what sticks in their head.. I think the same thing happened here.. I said 4 thousand and everyone has kept that number in their heads 😛
this guy is some self proclaimed drug dealer :wak  as he brags about the drugs he sells etc to his co workers.. so I have a feeling cash is not going to be an issue for him… The things people brag about eh?? :rofl
April 9, 2009 at 9:24 am #13905Very nice, the loud talking drug dealers. those guys like to spend way more on a paint job then their cars are even worth. I have done work for a few guys like this.
The money is great but get a lot of it up front, you never know when the guy will end up in the slammer
I know this dipstick body man who once way under quoted a color color change on a chevy truck:whistle: . He prepped it at home and then made an appointment and trailered it to MAACO. That truck turned bright red while he drank beer in a bowling alley across the street. About 3 hours and $400 later he brought it home. Ya know it looked really good too. 👿
April 13, 2009 at 3:45 pm #13959Well I talked to the owner of the Sub tonight at work.. As I had said once before.. He bragged about selling drugs… anyways, he offered me a substantial sum of money over what I quoted him if I would bump someone out and put his truck in line next :wak
Money is looking good, but now I gotta have a booth to shoot this in..
Any of my local guys here rent a booth to me for a day so I can shoot this monster?? I figured I would jamb it and cut it all in here, then it would be a wipe down and spray job once i got it in someones booth.. Lil trailer ride to someones shop, a quick wipe down with waterborne wax grease remover then a tac cloth right before I shot it…
Soooo, still dont know if I will take it in or not.. I would like to, however with my space I dunno.. running lots of options thru my head..
Time for bondoking to go to bed boys.. Been spraying prime all night at Ford.. I am tired..
Hope everyone had a Happy Easter
Nite Nite
April 14, 2009 at 3:45 am #13963One thing that I have done a few times when space is tight. Paint in two sessions, do one side, the roof and rear hatch and then a day or two later do the other side and hood. Its a waste of time but this way you can put the truck close to the wall on two sides and then have plenty of room on the other side and the front or back. Also you will not have such a cloud of overspray to deal with since you are only doing half at a time.
I hope that you find a booth to use, if not then maybe this would be an option.
