Hi,
I’m Alistair and I’m an alcoholic. Oh, sorry, wrong forum. I’m a amateur paint and body guy from Nottingham. A couple of older projects I have done include this Ford Prefect

I’ve not done much paint for a while and have a few projects coming up so I’m here to pick up some advice and brush up on my skills.
My main project is this 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury

Which has been getting some panel beating to get out some damage the little old lady owner did to it (thats my friend Steve)

I’m also working on a friend’s 1967 Bond Equipe GT4S with him.

As you may guess from the photos we don’t have proper facilities so must prep is done outside due to the dust etc. and spraying and colour sanding etc. gets done in my garage.
June 19, 2011 at 1:50 pm #31334Hi Alistair :welc
Glad to see you found us, as a lot of the guys on here have much more experience of the kind of work your doing than I have, so should be of more help.
Providing you can understand what they’re saying of course :rofl
AnonymousJune 19, 2011 at 5:37 pm #31335Nice work brother! Glad to have you here.
There’s plenty of people here to support alcoholism, I think 50% of pictures posted here include a beer or two…mmm, just thinking of a nice cold, delicious…frosty beeerr…gotta go.
June 20, 2011 at 10:44 am #31360cheers guys. Look forward to many daft questions from me as we progress…
June 22, 2011 at 5:47 am #31383welcome.
i like the last car, the sanding job on the hood makes an intresting design. clear it, wash it, put it out front to go. lol.
actually a nice 2 tone job on that one would look sweet.June 22, 2011 at 2:12 pm #31399I always like cars part rubbed out. Its like archaeology or something seeing all the old paint jobs!

And wondering which layer’s going to wrinkle up when you prime it. 😆June 25, 2011 at 12:12 am #31436I think you’d be very unlucky if they all did!
I know with celly (lacquer) primer you’re always going to lift something, but with the Lechler GTi 2K (I think that’s what you said you’re using) you’ve got much more of a chance as it has a much lower solvent content, so is less likely to “attack” the substrate(s)
I can’t exactly remember the thinner/reducer ratio of GTi, but I think it was something like 5-15%. Over a dodgy substrate I used to put a decent coat on at the lowest possible reduction (or even un-thinned), let that have a good flash to seal the surface, then apply another coat or two at a more reasonable percentage.
