Ive had good luck so far (which hasne been much). Perfect match each time. But yeah Im hoping things slow down a little where I can take some time to do better work. Plus the other guy is there now and that will help a lot.
And 8 jobs a day?! How the hell can you get that much done? I think I only did 8 jobs this week. Are you only spraying? Took me 5 hours today to pull the nose off an 09′ GMC truck, pull the grill off, the plastic filler piece, and the lower black plastic part and attached fairing, and swap over all the mounts to a new bumper (metal part). Still have to repair the painted filler part, and paint. Then reassemble and mount it back up.
Speaking of that, we dont have anything that tells us the kind of time it should take. Is there a place I can find that out? Just to give myself a baseline of how im doing….or should be doing!February 4, 2013 at 7:59 am #41046So how long does it take you to set up the camera and shoot the color vs pulling a few color chips from the cabinet

Thats my point,I can check variants in as little as 2 mins,to calibrate and set up the camera then plug it back into the computer for the formula is at least 10 mins. You check the color when the vehicle comes in the door so your not scrambling at 4:30 on thurs aft so it can go friday.
All I do now is mask and spray.I count bumpers and 2 tones as jobs so its not that bad. There should be a written estimate or work order on all collision jobs(times are provided by mitchel or equivalent except on judgement items like sheet metal repair)ask your boss for a copy.
February 4, 2013 at 9:14 pm #41061Sorry guys I should have been more clear about it. The jobber comes and shoots it, then goes back, mixes, and returns the color to us.
We don’t have normal work orders for ours here. I don’t know exactly how it works??!! The cars are here, and we simply fix them. No estimates or anything. Like I said the guy that owns this place is a big shot at the dealership, so somehow we just do them. Apparently their body shop sucks?February 4, 2013 at 11:55 pm #41063All that work and no mixing bench, doesn’t make sense,it costs way more for your jobber to mix your colors.Sounds like a sketchy outfit
February 5, 2013 at 5:21 am #41072It was the variants deck or the camera we took the camera.ya it takes 7-10 mins time and money well spent.I don’t even use the yr,code, vin information most off time just the camera pic.I’ve put chev colors on fords and ford colors on chevs.when it reads toy 4q2 gold and its a perfect match wow.
February 5, 2013 at 6:20 am #41075We have a mix bank, but when im slammed and cant get the info I need, I simply call and they come shoot a pic. Works out in the long run.

This is way too confusing
so you have a mixing bank. do you have alternate decks at the shop as well ?February 5, 2013 at 7:26 am #41084
metamerism?
February 5, 2013 at 8:49 am #41087Yes have the alternate decks too. I just didnt have the time to jack with it or do any sprayout cards at the time. I basically started a month behind on work, and have had to just burn these out. On top of that, as you can see, I really dont know what im doing with the collision repair. I was hired in to do the restorations, then the painter quit. So im in there trying to make something of it. Like I have said before, they did hire another guy, and he will likely be doing most of the collision stuff, but the boss man wants me to learn it as well. SO here I am trying to learn how things SHOULD be done before someone else shows me how “they do it”.
I have an older spectro (spectrophotometer = camera) that doesn’t read flake size. Still, I use it on every job. Today I had a Hyundai in Noble White (NW). When I brought up the colour in the computer there were 32 variants! And, that was just for Korea. I didn’t bother with all the others. Took a spectro reading and that narrowed down to the nearest variant, then let the machine shade to a 0.0 match. Took maybe 5 minutes start to finish. Mixed the colour and then checked against the car. Added a touch of reduced black to grey it up a little and that was it. Painted the panel to the edge and it was near perfect.
I treat it as a tool. It saves time – I can remember one job where I was trying to match a very faded light violet blue and it took me 3 hours to get even close. With the spectro I’m there in a few minutes and often it’s spot on first time. They do have a weakness and that is reddish blues and dark greys with red/violet and blue. Those ones still need a little eye matching, especially for flip. I often match 6 colours in a day – without the spectro I’d have no time for anything else and it really helps when you’re trying to match someone else’s mistake.
I don’t have the colour sample chips and, TBH, don’t miss them.
