Replaced this boxside on an 2008 Silverado in Feb. (8 months ago) with new OEM Part. Normal paint job- sealer, base, clear, over the factory black primer. Customer says paint started flaking off after taking the vehicle thru the car wash. It appears to me that the base is separating from the sealer. And also noticed a couple of rock chips on the edges (I put the arrows to the chips). Using Dupont Cromax Pro system- any thoughts on what could cause this adhesion problem? I dont think its entirely from the rock chips, although they didnt help. p.s. we didnt let the sealer sit too long
Thanks, nick
Attachments:October 16, 2012 at 3:14 am #38657Where are you? This can be a common problem in the snow belt area with high winds and anywhere they use calcium chloride on winter roads. What happens is you get a small rock chip, then moisture/calcium chloride attacks the base and gets up underneath the clear and the next thing you know its peeling.Longer flash time and the use of a hardener can help.If not you need longer flash time
Been using Cromax for 10 months I haven’t had any issues like that but I keep hearing if u let the base sit longer 8 hours the clear will not stick and be sure to give the sealer at least 25 to 35 min flash time at 75 to 80 degrees it’s a lot of trouble to make this product work and really not worth it
October 17, 2012 at 12:38 am #38665I had a customer with a rock chip, he thought it was a bug and put the hand car wash wand right up to it under high pressure and MY paint peeled off. He came clean about what happened. You will be able to tell if the adheasion problem is just in those chip spots when you start repairing it again. I use Chromabase, and Matrix clear without problems. Call your paint rep, at least maybe he can resupply the product. Sorry, I hate to EAT one too, but it is better than a pissed off customer. Bill
October 17, 2012 at 3:18 am #38667Bill we are talking about waterborne systems not solvent, big difference in diagnosing the problem.
Pretty sure that is what’s happening to you nick.It doesn’t help that cromax goes in in 1.5-2.5 coats back to back with no flash time. That is quite a bit of material and I bet the bottom is still somewhat soft. There have been numerous peelers up here from all of the big systems. If the bottom is soft once you get a chip moisture can get underneath the clear and you know what happens next. There is a shop north of us with 2 years of cromax redos.October 17, 2012 at 3:54 pm #38668I have zero experience with waterborne. See, I did not even know that’s what Cromax is. Learn something new everyday!
