    Hi all

I usually spray solid colour using cellulose paint on classic cars.

I am now having to do a modern repair and using polyester light metallic basecoat with clear.

I am getting conflicting info ref the distance of the gun. I see Jimmo on youtube is about the usual hands width away from the panel and spraying quite wet. Other info on the web says the distance should be around 20 – 24 inches and further back than normal when spraying metallic so the spray is drier. I have done a test session on a spare door with a distances a bit further away than normal but not as far back as 24 inches (2 feet away). The result in some areas is fine – no mottling or banding and flat but there are a couple of patches that show up with an outline of rougher looking flakes but this could be because the gun ran out of paint and probably spluttered at those points. I’ll probably do another test just to check my skill level before doing the real job.

Can anyone shed any light on this please? Thanks.

spray it like jimmo does. 2 ft away is just stupid. if you need to even out the metallics with a drop coat then you pull back 12-15 inches.
