Hey guys, Haven’t signed on in awhile but I’m looking at putting an air compressor in my garage and I know there is a few of you on here that can offer some great advice in considering and locating the unit I need.

So pretty much my situation is as follows. I’m looking at putting a compressor in the garage mainly to enable me to do more work then home. I would also like to put in some kind of air dryer. I’ve heard of some people rigging up makeshift ones with varying levels of success, that might be a post all on it’s own. ultimately I would like to be able to prime and paint small pieces but the big concern, is I want to be able to run a grinder or sander all day without worrying about blowing the compressor sky high, I know us body guys can be hard on compressors. I really need to be taken to school on compressors in regards to what kind of CFM I’m going to need and what kind of powerplant, tank size etc. I know I’ll probably want at least 60gal. It’s been awhile since I learned about compressors in tradeschool and to be honest I didn’t retain a whole lot of the info. I would like to keep my budget under 1000$ if I could but I could go over if I had too. So if any old friends want to chime in with your opinions and knowledge it would be appreciated. and if any new guys have any info you think might help please feel free to offer advice. It’s worth mentioning I’ll be working alone normally so generally only one tool at a time will be being used.

I’be included a picture of a cute kitten along with a pair a big boobs for motivation, because lets face it, the interweb is all about kittens and boobies

    Thanks in advance.

That sucks link won’t work but anyways you need atleast 60 gallon tank pumping out 12+ cfm and is 100% duty cycle

What do you have available for amps/volts in the garage?

I can’t believe I missed that, The garage is wired for 240. the breaker panel in the house is on the smaller side but I can’t remember the size off hand. A good friend of mine is a jayman electrician and figured the garage as a whole should be able to draw at least 30amps without a problem. He was going to come back with some more tools and check out the situation more

You probably know to buy the biggest compressor you can get for your budget but I highly recommend getting an electric da, then you only need a compressor big enough to run a gun, the mirka ceros is a brilliant bit of kit.

Do you have a sub-panel in the garage? What size is the breaker on the 240 Circuit? Check KMS Tools, they usually have compressors on sale. They have a couple of 5Hp/60gal 230V compressors in your price range.

I would just get the biggest u can get for 240volt, which is around 7.5hp with 60gall tank might be able o get mouthing little bigger.
I used 7.5hp when I first started out was fine pretty much ran the whole time was spraying tho was pushing 25 cfm now I have 30hp with about 300gals that handles 5body guys and full time painter.
I’ve always have had Curtis compressors, pretty much bullet proof motors usually go threw starters and capictors every six months but no bad to replace couple bucks and couple mintues to replace, also keep basic spare parts around for them like qaskets and pressure switchs

7.5hp is what I run, and I got it for a great deal at $2300. Look carefully that you’re buying a quality unit, and not just being led on by a few bloated specs.

I agree with the boys 7.5 is the biggest you will get for 240 power. I like the emergency pull secoundary fuse set up. I think another important feature is the cast iron head. I had an aluminum head once on the craftsman professional compressor. Definately not for a professional. But sears did replace 3 times with some amount of aggrivation. Warrantee is important. What is covered, who does the shipping, are you where a technician can come for service, does the company get an amount of tries to repair befor replace and so on. It sucks when you get these answers when you are down! Time is money. Good luck
