just looking for recommendations for a good air file/ inline sander etc. just for roughing in filler on large flat panels. price not important. i’m more concerned with performace.
October 13, 2009 at 12:02 am #16423i use an viking but always have lusted after the hutchens inlines i bet there more agressive an have a longer stroke myself i would get the short version if i do buy one never had a problem ruffing the mud flat with those 😉 every ingersol i ever had was a big steaming pile :cens if ya get a hutchens let me know how it performs :silly:
October 13, 2009 at 12:43 am #16424The hutchins hustler inline absolutely sucks azz! They are top heavy, uncomfortable, shorter stroke than the viking, and slower. The one in my toolbox collects dust.Back when I used to do lots of bodywork I would use a viking or national detroit 8″ mudhog to rough filler in to shape on flat panels.I use a viking inline,I think they outperform the hutchins hands down.Just my 2 cents though 😛
October 13, 2009 at 1:26 am #16425I’ve always used a Viking, and am happy with it, but I don’t really have anything else to compare it to.
I had always heard that the hutchins were basically a rectangular random orbital sander, not a “file”.Lately my vikings just seems to sit in my box.
Most of the time I rough my filler work out with the mud hog, then block.
October 13, 2009 at 5:43 am #16431I have a Hutchins Hustler inline and a Hutchins orbital. I have used a viking also. The viking has a bit more of an aggressive cut. The Hutchins is a little top heavy but I have never found it to be a problem of uncomfortable. The Hutchins is easier to control. I personally like the Hutchins a little bit more, but I don’t think you could go wrong with either. BTW I am only talking about the inline Hutchins and not the orbital.
I love the orbital Hutchins. I use it for primer on large areas. Something like a hail job or storm damage. It is smooth enough for final sanding. It cuts like a D/A but blocks at the same time. Not something you would use everyday but very nice to have when the situation occurs.
Between the Viking and the Hutchins I don’t think you would be disappointed with either.
October 13, 2009 at 5:43 am #16432I’ve got the hutchins orbital long board as well as a ND small version of the same thing,, never use ’em.
Also have a viking knock off from Napa that sees more use than the orbitals but not that much more use.
Usually just go with the ND 8″ Mud Hog then a manual block from there.
October 15, 2009 at 7:42 am #16455I had a Hutchins years ago that I loved.. It was nice as far as I could tell, but its one of those things I lost along lifes divorce highway many moons ago
Im like most here, I use a ND mudhog and then switch to a block.. although there are times I wish I had a good air file, just never bought another one
