    I am starting on a 1985 El Camino soon and want to do either some marbling,
    using lace, etc. So my question is, for someone who has never used one.
    what gun, compressor, hose, etc. would you recommend for buying?

    and also I have heard of a few tips and tricks, but wonder if
    anyone might know some more.

    I’m no artist…

    but to do marbling, you can use a paint gun (no air brush needed). In fact, there are several things you can do with a paint gun.

    Air brushing is more for small areas/deatil or murals.

    I bought an Iwata Eclipse. It is dual action, about 100$.Get a few extra cups. You can use the smallest compressor made. Very low pressure 10-25 psi. Marbleing can be done by laying on a dark, or light base, let dry. Now lay on the opposite, light over the dark,say. Now quickly put a sheet of Suran wrap on the wet paint, and remove it. Now you have a marble look, to clear over. Don’t worry, you can’t screw it up, unless you change the way you do it halfway through. Practice on junk. To do a lace, buy some, lay it and spray through it. Practice makes perfect! Have fun! Bill

    get a dual action airbrush, press button down to get air and pull back for paint flow, the further back the more paint flow. A good one to start with will have a .3 to .5 mm fluid nozzle and needle. An eclipse is a good one to start with, bottle feed is easier to use and change colors, but is like a siphon gun. A top feed or side feed with gravity cup will give you better control on very fine lines. Practice, pratcice, and practice some more. Lots of great info at airbrush.com and coastairbrush.com

    @Ben: Me too, thats why I am marblizing instead of doing murals
    I thought you might be able to with a regular gun, but was con-
    cerned about the fan radius not small enough and PSI not being low enough.

    @Bill
    : Thanks, I was leaning towards an Iwata.

    I’ll be sure and post some pictures when i’m done,
    if not on something else then the El Camino.

    you can do all the texturing with a normal or touchup gun. The veining would be a little easier with a airbrush. The Iwata ecplises are pretty inexpensive and are pretty decent for general airbrush work. Check out http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=32
    and craig fraisers books are pretty good guide for some of that stuff. they are at the bottom of the page http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=324
