Well, I hate to start another thread about primer guns…but this one is NOT about the 3M accuspray.

I’m looking into buying a good primer gun, tired of the hit and miss scenarios with the cheap ones. I’m considering either the SATAjet 100 BF HVLP or the (American version) of the Devilbiss PRI. I have previously used and older version if the SATA and it seemed like a good gun. I’ve never seen the PRI before or know of anyone who’ has used it. They are both relatively close in price from my jobber.

Has anyone used the current versions of either? Any quirks? With the SW primer I use, it’s piss thin like everything else, so a tip from about1.4 to 1.6 is ideal…unlike other primers

Sata 100b RP primer gun here. Nicest primer gun I have used hands down. The hvlp would be second.

X2 on the sata 100b rp.

i wouldnt pass on a sata, but i bought a protek spray gun a few months ago for primer to replace my accuspray and for about a hundred bucks and an imitation of iwata or sata it does the job good.

I like my sata rp. my buddy has a old pri and I think it would be good for your thinner sherwin primer, but I dont like it fo the thicker primers. you really got to pound it IMO

AirGunza HTE 1.8 or a devilbiss FLG 5 transtech 1.8 ,dont waste your time with HVLP for primers they lack sufficiant air velocity to enable good atomisation and decent transfer rates when used for higher viscoty materials ,conventional high pressure is about the best for primers but you could fall foul of regulations even though with thicker materials they can have higher transfer rates than HVLP

I did wind up buying the RP version of the SATA. I got a 1.6 tip which seems to work well with our primer (although the Sherwin Williams rep suggested possibly going to a 1.4). It’s a very nice gun and sprays great. I am very happy.

    Thanks for the recommendations everyone

I’m also interested in buying the 100b RP. Are you still happy with the 1.6 tip or would you recommend a different size?
I will mostly use it for high built primers on motorcycle gastanks/parts.

Still very happy with the gun. I Would highly recommend one.

The 1.6 is great for our primers, and probably for most others too. If you had a higher viscosity urethane primer, then a 1.8 would be better, but I think a 1.8 might be a hair big for typical higher end production primers.

I guess if you aren’t doing huge jobs either (sticking to bike tanks) then the 1.6 would likely be good for you

Thanx for your response Ben. Ordered one with a 1.6 tip and a 0,75L alu cup. Same price as the 0,6L plastic cup.

Sata recommends 22-29psi for full fan width (and 7-22psi for smaller fan/spotrepair).

At full fan width, when do you use 22 and when 29?
22 for thinner primers and 29 for thicker?

Glad your happy with the gun Ben! Are you using that shiny SW primer. I have mucked around with it a bit on a few restorations, and liked how you could see the straightness of the body work in the shine. It was thin though, however I sprayed it over blocked out spray filler so build wasent supper important. I liked the shiny characteristic of it though.

Yes, using the shiny primer, but in low voc format (P27 instead of the P30). Compared to other low Voc primers that I have used, I don’t think its really thin, but I do know what you meant.

It’s a great product for collision shops. Preflexed and can be mixed as a sealer, and is able to be purchased in basic colours like Sikkens Colour build plus.

Which inlet pressure do you guys use mostly with the 100b rp?

Used it yesterday for the first time with a sealer and 22psi was more than enough. Any higher is only more waste/overspray.

Awesome gun by the way. Only wished it was chrome plated instead of the gray anodize finish. Looks a little cheap.
