Hi all. I have been building cars for years, but do not have much experience with today’s finishes. I did take 2 years in auto body classes in school over 25 years ago and have painted a few cars with a old Sears spray gun, and lacquer. My current project is a 67 Ranchero that has thin original paint with previous owner spray can primer job residing over the top. It’s all very thin, I was thinking about using aircraft stripper? any thought? Or do you think it would be more advisable to just DA the car with 80 grit to bare metal, do the body work, seal it up. I have a gallon of DP90, then primer surfacer. I have never shot enamels, base coat clear coat etc. I just want a decent daily driver..not a show car. What is the simplest and most cost effective base coat system nowadays with minimal cutting/buffing lol. I retired my old Sears $59 paint gun. I was looking a a 3 piece HVLP gun at the local paint shop for $139 but it’s pretty cheap. It included a primer gun, touch up, and one for paint. It’s not something I will use very often so I don’t want to spend a lot of cash. Any thoughts or suggestions much appreciated and thank you for your time. :rock
Attachments:aircraft stripper is a pain in most cases. I would do as you said and DA the car down. I see you have a bit of surface rust to contend with also , As for the paint to use if its going to be a driver and a solid color easiest thing to do would be to use a single stage. find out what your local Paint store deals with for paint , since you have some DP90 I would guess it a PPG jobber close by maybe you could ask them about some PPG Concept paint this is there single stage line good stuff.
here is a link for the Concept Line (it the Tech sheet for it)

The DA will help with the rust, but you may need to be a little more aggressive to get it all. As far as paint, I highly suggest single stage too (especially for a complete). Concept is a very high quality product and is very easy to apply (I find it gives a good glossy finish and is hard to run). You may want to use the slowest reducer and activator as the concept does seem to be a little fast (in my opinion).
June 22, 2011 at 2:16 pm #31400I am also an occasional painter working on my own projects and I will also tell you to keep off the stripper. It makes a mess. Maybe in a pro shop the guys can deal with that better but for the hobbyist its a nightmare.
I use stripping discs like the ones from Eastwood or sanding discs to strip old paint.
For surface rust I use a wire brush in a drill to clean it out. It has more flexibility than a sander to get in the pits the rust causes in the surface and you want all that rust out of all those pits.
Nice ride, post more pics as you work on it please!
