Hey just wondering if there is anyone spraying envirobase clears like the EC700 and EC750. I’m having some problems with die back or shrinking. I have a couple of jobs like front clips. They look awesome when i spray them and then i bake them. Look a little bit shrunk. I looked at the one i sprayed last week thursday and it looks horrible. We had to cut and polish the hood to make it look good, That really sucks when the hood only had a few dust nibs in it. My boss is pretty anal he almost wants a show quality job. To me it looks like a dried up orange the texture, that the best i can describe it. I also find that its pretty hard to get the clear to flow nice. I dont have much experience with any other clears. let me know what you guys think.

I have a couple of questions. Are you using any accelerator? What speed of hardener? How long are you baking? If you are not in a low voc area you can change to a more user friendly clear Like concept 2021,dc 3000/4000 global 893/894.If you are using fast on a horizontal surface it will dieback, you could try a shorter bake cycle also.Let us know…..

I’m using usually medium harder except fo hotter days and bigger jobs then I switch to slow. I’m using slow reducer for some extra flow. I bake it for 45 mins at 165 which gives me about 50 celius metal temperature. It takes 15 to 20 to get to that temp. It’s a semi downdraft booth. Unfortunately I’m in Canada where we have voc regulations so the only ppg clears I can use is ec700&750 and the dc4010. I’m also spraying envirobase.

I have never sprayed those clears but in the climate I spray with hot temps there’s high humidity. When I need to add reducer I add just enough to get the viscosity where it should be. I use a fast reducer because after the clear is on the panel it needs to get out before the clear crosslinks. If I want a slicker finish I try to get it with gun setup (tip size, pressure, distance, etc…) If I want the clear to stay open longer I add flex. Also, some clears you have to wait a little before bake. Just some things to consider. Hope you get it sorted out soon. :cheer:

Well illy go back to using fast reducer. I used to before then keep going to medium then to slow. It definitely flowed nicer. But that makes since that it might not evaporate in time. What about sealer reducer. I usually use medium and my booth temp is 80 most of the time.

You may be alright with that. I spray standox mostly. The sealer I use is 3:1:30% so I almost always use a medium hardner and fast reducer. This works well for me. You may want to experiment with it and see what gives you the best results. Also with sealer I have seen guys pile it on to hide stuff. That causes die-back due to the surface skimming over and solvents trying to come out later.

I am the opposite,I prefer slow in a downdraft on almost everything except one or two panels. If you use slow you can spray it how you want and not have to put it on thick so it will flow.Flow is a bad thing, you should spray it how you want so you don’t need to rely on flow. For me using a slower mix will allow me to not work as hard, the clear sprays easier.looks better, has no dieback, will flash faster due to a thinner wetter coat.Try it,it might help.We only bake for 35 ins at 140,165 might be too hot.

I have been painting for 30 years, live in compliant state of MD.I was having these same exact issues all the time, after playing with every single variant as making the clears look their best the ONLY solution seemed to be to not bake them!!!! Now fortunately I have small independent shop that can afford to do this with time management and all…

Well i think i might have been putting my sealer on to heavy and not enough flash time. Last couple of jobs look awesome so far. Left my bake set at 165, which only gives me a metal temp of 130. It can’t get hot enough. I did 40min instead of 45. I won’t really know cause most of the vehicles are gone in a couple of days. I sprayed the sealer with med thinner and clear with medium hardener and slow thinner so it flows nice. 🙂

Believe it or not it also is best to use the slower hardener in the sealer because it will give you the flow you need without the work ,whereupon we tend to force flow from using the medium hardeners and therefore using more material in the long range needing even more flash time…
You will know if you ever do not let the sealer flash long enough because the base has a very strange reaction to being put on top of wet sealer…its like the metallics just go nutz and it looks all motley and almost seperates….
Overall the clears are just not all they can be in my opinion and are way over priced,I am being told they are very close to releasing a new clear that is much better..I have had very good luck with smaller jobs and using the 800 clear….very fast,in the rain in an hour!!!!! Deliverable within the same day!!!!

So then do you use the eh392 hardener for sealer? We have established that the clears are crappie compared to what they used to be. My boss has a 71 Cheverly that was painted 7 years ago with D894 and that looks better than his hood that he changed a year ago with ec750. Ec750 just scratches easier by the D894. Are you spraying the waterbase as well?

    June 14, 2014 at 12:45 am #46805

Yes clears suck in my opinion, its almost as though they are wet and soft for a much longer time, thus far allowing the clear to be open to scratching much easier as to compared to a clear that gets hard more quickly..Yes I am shooting the Envirobase system all the way through..from sealers to waterbase to ec clears…I do put another clear on top of some of my cheaper jobs made by sikkens called Wanda…. I have played with lotsa clears and this water and found that price, quality ease of use The Wanda hands down came up as a good choice!!!!
Prior to the PPG Envirobase I shot PPG DBC for last 12 years..FYI

Have you guys ever tried sikkens superior 250 2 pack clear?I find it a dream to spray with great gloss and hold out.

    June 14, 2014 at 6:09 am #46811

No I haven’t but i went to a ppg training course with a guy who used to spray sikkens and only said good things about it.
