Two weeks ago I lost my job 🙁
After 5 years of running the paintshop and making daily judgement calls about what we should paint and what we should leave / buff / touch up etc., I made a choice my boss didn’t agree with. This led to a very public dressing down in front of several other staff, which in turn led to a heated arguement as I defended my decision and my department. I tried to cool the situation off by moving to the more private surroundings of the spray booth, but he continued to lay into me for the one bad call I’d made in as long as I can remember. I lost my temper and threw my gun on the floor. He took this as an act of aggression (it certainly wasn’t!, more like extreme frustration!) and after a period of suspension he decided to dismiss me for gross misconduct.
It’s not something I’m proud of, and I’m certainly not looking for sympathy, but it’s only right that I come clean.
Thankfully a buddy offered me a job straight away so at least I’m still earning. I reckon it’ll only be temporary though as it’s back to where I started – SMART repairing out the back of a van. I’m working for one of the UK’s largest dealer networks which have their own in-house SMART teams, and so far it’s going well as I was smashing through my targets after the first few days. I can’t see me wanting to be painting outside in a big tent by the time the winter comes though so I’m keeping my eye out for something else.
So my guns have been layed to rest for a short time while I blow things in with cheap little mini guns, although I’m keeping my hand in by doing a few jobs for friends at my mates premises.

October 13, 2012 at 11:57 pm #38604Sorry to hear that. At least you were able to jump right into something else. Hope you didnt hurt the gun
October 14, 2012 at 12:04 am #38605Hang in there Andy :cheer: I think everybody has been in a position like that before, especially if you have been doing this for a long period of time.Often personalities will clash and authority doesn’t like to be challenged even if they are wrong. You are very good at what you do and I’m sure its just a matter of time before you get back into a big production shop.Have you thought about being a paint rep or technical rep/instructor at a training center?Maybe it’s time to look at doing something else.Good luck to you and keep us posted :cheer:
October 14, 2012 at 5:49 am #38608Andy keep your head up, 99% of the time change is for the better. Good luck and God Bless>
October 14, 2012 at 12:20 pm #38612Thanks for the support guys 🙂
Jason – yes I’ve thought about the whole rep / technical training side and I’d like to give that a shot if an opportunity came along.
October 14, 2012 at 4:42 pm #38613I know the feeling my friend. When I lost my Textile job, it was the begining of my self employment and the best thing that ever happened. Your boss must have been an ass.
October 14, 2012 at 9:10 pm #38618Sorry to hear Man. But as Jason said a tech rep or ability to teach your knowledge to others would be great. You do very good work and will be a great asset wherever you may go.
October 15, 2012 at 6:33 am #38631Damn Andy that sucks, very sorry to hear that.
I know on your side of the pond jobs are slim as a lot of shops have closed. SMART repair seems to be good over there. You will be fine though, a painter of your caliber is hard to find. Maybe your DeBeer rep can find you something?
If you ever decide to venture to this side and paint let me know!
October 15, 2012 at 8:26 pm #38640Thanks guys.
I’d be over your side like a shot if I could persuade the wife to emigrate 😆
With the variety of work you do Nelson it would be my dream job!
October 15, 2012 at 9:58 pm #38645Well tell the wife you’re the king of your castle, and you’re putting your foot down!
Time to try out life in the beautiful rainforest of Alaska!
October 15, 2012 at 11:45 pm #38651I’d better not tell the wife anything. She’ll think you’re being serious and have me looking for schools and property before I know it! 😆
October 16, 2012 at 4:34 am #38659Well there is some paperwork to lock this all in, but I really do need help around here in a bad, bad way! A painter would be a HUGE plus!
I know you can wire cars. Can you tint windows?
Tell her!
