I’m new here, but I have been painting as a professional for 20 years. I just got a 65 Comet back from the media blaster and it is perfect clean metal with holes all over like a sponge. I figure to etch prime the whole car, in and out to protect the metal while I weld in new patches. I looked at weld thru primers but they don’t adhere well and seem to be for use between overlaps. I don’t really want the primer to be in the way of my welding, but I don’t want surface rust either. Maybe I will put tape over the rusty holes before i etch prime. Any ideas? Thanks Bill

Attachments:August 15, 2012 at 10:21 pm #37853maybe, I’ll just buy this and tell the customer.. I’m finished.. bring $7500 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280938784229&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en
You need Epoxy not etch. Etch is mainly used in a production setting because of its speed. Epoxy is superior for adhesion due to it relying on mechanical adhesion unlike etch relying on chemical adhesion. Blasted metal gets Epoxy, its the best for rust protection and is mainly used in restorations.
August 16, 2012 at 2:49 am #37860I have been using Picklex 20 for years. Can’t say enough good about it. Not cheap, but does the job.
This stuff rocks! Read about it works great on bare metal and promotes welding while stopping corrosion.
And no, I don’t work for either of these companies.
August 16, 2012 at 4:36 pm #37867Epoxy it is! makes sense too. The surface is so rough from blasting…there will NOT be any adhesion problems. I’m still putting tape over the holes I’ll cover with metal. Kinda hared for me to get motivated on this JUNK project, when the one on ebay is about to sell for $3500. I tried to tell ’em. Thanks for the advise! Bill
