I have been using it for a few weeks now. No more hair dryers for me! This base lays down great and has cured the seediness problems I had with WB Onyx and even Diamont to some extent. Some blends have been a challenge and some formulas tend to blotch on the hoods, but, I received a new slow reducer today that is supposed to cure these problems. We will see.

Cool thanks for the heads up,I thought blends and metallic control would be an issue with low voc solvent. When they get somethig that doesn’t flash to fast it sure sounds promising.

Have you sprayed any solid colors yet?
    How are you doing blends?
Any coverage issues because of it being so thin?
I hear colors are running a little lighter because they are drying too quick and the metallic doesn’t have time to do its thing.

Got the slow reducer today and did a blend on a bumper. It worked out very well. I think this system is going to be great. Hope to get training from BASF soon.

Sounds promising but a blend on a side panel or the middle of a hood would be a better test, keep us posted.Where abouts are you?

BASF rep said this is not going to replace Onyx water or be a stand alone system.
It is a supplement to water.
Best use is 2-3 panels, solids and small 3-stage jobs.
Said it was too fast to even use it on a bed side in the summer months.

Well thats a bummer,I don’t really see the point of it then.

I was a bit suprised that this would be that good, the solvents that which the paint companies are alowed to use to keep the voc’s down just arnt that good no matter how they mix and match or try to blend them, the technology just isint there to make a nice low voc solvent production base coat

    Anyone have any feedback yet?

Our rep just came in with this product last week. We’re interested to give it a shot. I’ve been shooting Onyx for 2 years now and the only time that I had a problem with adhesion is on repaired bumpers that my preppers over used AM800. We have since thrown the AM800 in the trash.

Just a few notes and observations. Obviously I rep for BASF so my opinion may be biased however. The stuff is FAST. Did a demo in a envirobase shop, crossflow booth, PSB silver on a ram 1500. Sweeping the side using the fender as our only blend panel. 68 degrees and 67% humidity. 1 min 21 sec between coats and fully flashed. 2 coats @75% overlap using a Sata 4000 1.4 hvlp 18psi 1 drop coat
@ 19.5 psi and ready for clear. Next up was a Prius 040 white, Fender replacement blent the door and a repair on the corner of the bumper. Used ds40 sealer with white mixed in sealer. 2 coats @75% overlap to full hiding Flash time 3min 35 sec between coats.

    Some notes
    1.4 fluid tip Strongly recommended
Solids are going to dry with a shine, It looks wet but it is dry
Medium wet first coat @75% overlap
    18psi on Sata’s
16psi on supernova, lph440, Tekna, and Prolite.

So could you tell us if it is only meant for 2-3 panel jobs? Can you spray a complete with it?….. or is it like all the other low voc solvent base coat systems that are just too damn fast and leave you with a desert storm sandy finish 😛 Believe it or not my flash times with autowave are very similar for the size of jobs that you mentioned.

    September 28, 2013 at 8:52 am #44654

YES, you could easily do a Allover with the slower resin RM-R09. Keep in mind the conditions of the booth we were in were less than optimal. Also using supplemental air it dries ever faster, Like 45 sec between coats, However they wanted to see it with no supplemental air movement.

If youre drying Autowave at that speed you must have one good drying system….. We have a state of the art Honda dealer with to brand new GFS booth with the quads drying system and they are between 7-8 minutes between coats with autowave

Well that sounds interesting, maybe solvent will make a comeback up here in canuckville. For 2-3 panel jobs with autowave out flashtimes are in the 2-3min range per coat, completes take longer. We have no real special equipment,a couple of venturi blowers on stands and our down draft booth moves 12,000-14,700cfm with a good airmakeup unit in the winter.Humidity in my area is pretty dry, usually in the 20-40% range so that helps.
