I have a 3M PAPR and a SATA supplied air mask. Far and above I prefer the 3M as I can walk from the booth to the washer, and anywhere else I like. However, that does not get yo away from buying filters.

I tried the Devilbiss unit and found it not to move enough air.

The SAS belt mounted filter is rather cheaply made so I was not a fan.

Another good option would be mar tech.

im looking to do the same thing myself, I havent tried any other fresh air hoods than a 3M one a couple years ago and found myself tearing the thing off in the booth because it would fog up and i wouldnt be able to see nearly as well as with the naked eye. Id be interested in trying the sata vision hoods as ive heard good things.

I have the 3m papr as well, works pretty good but the filters are pricy, but the nice thing about it you can use it anywhere, you dont have to rely on a compressor to supply your air.

I have an SAS unit. Dont use it much, but when I was painting production I used it every day. I liked that fact that you hook the airline up to the belt unit and the gun and fresh air got supplied of that unit. no real extra weight to drag around. I had a full face mask but it was a little small. the next size up would have probably been alot more comfortable. the carbon filters ran about $80-90 bucks a shot and needed to be changed every 6 months. The 3m self contained units look too big and bulky. I can picture damage being done with that thing if things are tight in the booth

3M actually has a new one called versa pro. looks less bulky but requires an air hose to move around in http://3mcollision.com/products/safety/masks-and-respirators/powered-air-purifying-respirator-papr/3m-versaflo-painters-supplied-air-respirator-kit-37336.html

Like the SATA, Devilbiss, and others, first you’ll need grade D breathable air. Then you’re going to need a carbon monoxide alarm.

Is there a small compressor system that will pump you breathable air? I’d love to avoid hauling a big hose around. At this point I still use a little ghetto mask…..

i thought that the hip charcoal filter was what made it grade D air

Ya, but you need to have good clean dry air coming to it. At least a 3 stage filter

Well I have a good air system – bone dry air. This oughta do the trick. Plus, it just looks fancy.
