I’ve got this set of rims that I’ve been asked to change the red to a yellow. I am trying to figure out the best way to mask them off that won’t require 3 hrs of labor to accomplish. I tried the one using fineline and it is very time consuming and I don’t know if I’ll get as nice of a line as I’d like. I seem to recall someone suggesting liquid mask and cutting out, wondering some thoughts on trying it. Thanks.

May 29, 2010 at 1:41 am #21644just paint it with a pinstripe brush and forget about the masking 😉
The only thing I would question with Masking the red, Spray masking it then unmasking the red would be how clean of a line can spray mask really create?
I mean you can’t really peel it to cut your lines… So I’m not too sure. The design looks like a masking nightmare.
I would either try some Sticky Mickey’s (Or some other Adhesive masking film sheets) then razoring out the red stripe.Judging by the design you wont be able to run a single sheet around that mess… But you could probably use the 6 inch, and just put it in each of the spokes 45* angle. then bonding all the sheets together in the middle.
May 29, 2010 at 6:06 am #21651that really looks pretty simple to mask and i would do it pretty much how you got it there. i would put a piece of tape on each tip and cut the curve out since its way to tight to bend fineline around. i would then run fineline right on that edge. i cant see it taking more than 15-20 minutes a wheel. here was a set i did awhile back that was a bit more tricky and i think each wheel maybe took a little more than an hour plus i have to do both sides.

AnonymousJune 16, 2010 at 3:26 am #21882ha, oddly enough when they were picked up he said he knew a bunch of guys that wanted the same thing and was wondering if we wanted the referals. We told him as long as they are alright leaving them for severals weeks we can do it as fill work but were just soo busy it`s tough to find time to get them done. We only charged $300 and it`s about 10 hrs of work I`m guessing around, I guess you can only charge so much for this kind of thing…..definately not the graviest work!! … but they were a fun change from collision i do suppose.
June 16, 2010 at 4:58 am #21887just some pricing info for you jimmo……i do alot of stuff like that as well as my buddy who has a powdercoat shop who does 1-4 sets of wheels like that a day. both him and i would get about $140-$180 per wheel. of course that would be for both colors but still, it only takes 15 min to shoot the background color. your price is really reasonable and you should probably get more. i know if someone brought me in a set of wheels with the tires already off and just wanted them scuffed and shot a different color i would be $100 a wheel….easy and thats pretty cheap. i have custom car shops around here that i do work for that mark that up 100%. i looked up the invoice for the wheels i posted the pic of and to do those 2 wheels ran $600 and it was for one of my dealers who i usually cut a little break.
June 16, 2010 at 6:48 am #21898Those rims look sick :woohoo:
Both of Them (jimmo and jim c)
But jimmo why didn’t you use your sri devilbiss to clear those rims?
When the wheel guys at work mess up the rim, I normally paint them with the Sri. Its alot easier than with the RP.
