I’m curious what you pros are doing to smoke PC light housings.

Seems, from what I’ve heard, the industry standard varies a bit from place to place. Some guys just buzz down the plastic with 600 and blast some clear with a little black base mixed in. Others sand up to 1000 or 1200 and use black candy. Others yet prefer the film when possible, and only spray when necessary.

Personally, I want to spray them. And not just shoot them, but gain the benefits of shooting them. I mean nice even color, perfect sand prep off the car, and a nice build of clear on top so they can be polished later without affecting the tint.

I’m curious about black tint instead of base. I don’t mix anything, so I’m just grasping at straws here. Is there any advantage to this over base? I’m using a fast, spot panel clear from MS. Seems to work pretty well.

    So what’s your method?

Using a black candy will give a better appearance. Regular basecoat toners use a carbon black pigment that is milled for the basecoat. A candy is a dye which lets it transmit more light and keep a cleaner appearance. Using just a toner will let less light through and can give it a bit of a dirty look if the wrong toner is chosen.

If you go the candy route some can be a bit too blue and need a drop of a gold/yellow candy to get the purple out of it.

    Awesome. Thanks

I know some guys just dump a little black base coat in with the clear. Is there anything wrong with that?

    Candy is friggin expensive…

I would say just put a few drops of black and put 2 or 3 coats and if I need to I will reclear with regular clear thus will help give it a deeper black look also

Can’t get candy here so I mixed 3% black base into a mix of 1 part ppg color blender D895 and 2 parts Reducer sprayed 4 thin coats then 2 coats of clear.

black base? I’ve never actually used black base, just shot SS black urethane and cleared it when necessary.

How long does solvent base last anyway? I might have a quart on the shelf for an awful long time…..
