Beugler- Review

Thought I’d give my first impression/review of the Beugler striping tool. I got the tool awhile ago but never posted any results. . Pulling it out of the box, it felt heavy, looked well constructed, nice finish, simple in design/function with a precision fit of the wheel in the wheelhead to pick-up the paint. I ordered a few different wheels, but think I had a 1/8″ wheel in there, so I loaded some ‘one shot’ straight out of the can and away we went.
I ran a few straight lines on my practice board, that was too easy, nice straight lines, consistent widths, unlike my first attempt with a brush, however some of my later brush strokes looked about the same as the Beuglers, so nothing to get excited about at this point.
Next attempt was with the magnetic guide strip with guide arm mounted to the tool, I pulled out a FL front fender, figured this should be too easy, put the arm in the groove and pull! I quickly realized if the guide strip and wheel are not on the same ‘plane'( with the crown of the fender, this isn’t going to happen ) the potential for failure is high!
If you focus on keeping the wheel perpendicular to the surface, the guide arm will not be in the groove in the guide, if you focus on keeping the guide arm in the groove, the wheel will be cambered causing inconsistent line widths. Maybe it was user error, but I couldn’t make good use of the guide strip as it was intended (in this application). I tried running the guide arm along side the magnetic strip instead of in the groove, it worked somewhat. I then removed the guide arm and pulled a few more lines keeping my finger along the side of the magnetic guide strip, again it worked OK but I found the wheel can easily kick out and or tilt causing inconsistent lines,( FAIL ). Keeping the wheel perpendicular to the surface is crucial :S

As there aren’t many flat surfaces on a bike, I cleaned the Beugler and put it away. I’ll have to give it another shot later, but in my opinion there is no magic in this tool ( that I was hoping for  ), I imagine with enough practice you’d get the hang of it, but perhaps you could put that time into practicing with a brush and get the same results.

i have never been a big fan of the beugler. it was fine for me as a beginner to get just ok quality lines out of on projects that werent to critical but it will only get you so good. if you have never pinstriped before in your life it will give you better results than a brush but a little practice with a brush and you will be waaaay better off. i used the beugler a few times and put it away and never used it again.

Beuglers were used at the factory and…

The full length striping fixtures were suspended from overhead at the end of the Final Line, had locators in the wheel openings, with suction cups that secured them in place. After the stripes were applied along the fixture’s steel guide rails with Beugler rollers, the fixtures were released and returned to their overhead position on balancers.

I thought I had a photo of the lineworker doing this.

I’ve heard the factory uses a ‘robot’, I tried to find something out there to back that up. No doubt the rollers would do the job as they will put out a nice consistent width line, something I can’t do with a brush without way more practice.
