Bike parts

I’m finishing off body and paint on a custom bike my father in law in building. I just have to re-clear the tanks and it’s all done. I just wanted some advice for what I could do around the fuel cap. Is there anything I could do to protect it from the gas. I’ve seen people experience blistering around the fuel cap. I was thinking maybe a nice line of seam sealer around the lip to seal the edge better, but I don’t know how well seam sealer would hold up either, what do you guys think.

edit: I’ll post a few more pics of the rest of the job shortly

Wish I could take credit for the graphics but it’s been years since I played with graphics and I wanted it to look as good as can be so I sent it out. The artist did an amazing job.

Looking good dill. with the tank, you dont want your paint line to go further down than the seal of the filler neck. that will just allow the vapors to attack at it constantly. to seal the paint edge take some clear 2 part jbweld and pinstripe the paint edge with it. I have heard of the clear nail polish working but i would be sceptical as acetone will remove nail polish (thats all nail polish remover is). Gas fumes are nasty and i would feel more comfortable using the epoxy jbweld.

I’ve painted a lot of bike tanks (mostly solid colour and 2/3 tone jobs, nothing fancy) on OEM tanks. I usually check where the factory painted to when I begin and mask my line there. It is usually just outside of the seal for the gas cap. I’ve personally never seen one of mine have issues, and the bare metal area around the seal never seems to corrode.

Don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but it has worked well for me.

This is what you need. If this is hard to find some JB Weld will work also. Jim C knows what the lip seal is, that might help in finding it locally.

    Parts look nice Dillon!

nail polish doesn’t work. I’m sure you guys can figure that out. that stuff is a lacquer of some type and has no chemical resistance at all. gas will eventually penetrate it. the right thing to use is epoxy and it can’t be any type. its called novalac epoxy. its what is used to line fuel tanks and tanks that hold other really nasty chemicals for chrome plating, sulfuric acid, $hit like that. it is usually only available in large sizes. much larger than you would need for just 1 gas tank hole. there is a company out there that repackages it in a one use packet. the name they gave it was lip seal. you used to be able to get them from http://www.innate.com. not sure if he has them anymore or not.
