Hi,been on this forum for quite along time now but this my 1st post,
Basically im doing a full repaint on a car and have come across some rusty bits, some bits i have hit with the grinder and has taken out all pits so im happy with them but some bits are pitted and if keep grinding be no metal left etc.
The thing i really want to know is if i sandblast/clean rust out of these pits then epoxy this will the rust come back? if yes how long? ive never been to clear with this so i end up doing more work by cutting out and welding new metal in etc but some bits only have some pits left after grinding, so will this be fine? i hate rust :S
Any info would be great, i have allways been bit unsure about Rust, know the basics with it but not enough.
Thanks alot, 😉
rust is like cancer. the only way to cure it is to remove it. so if its a small area thats pitted and a sand blaster can remove the rust in the pits then your safe to continue the metal work. however if you start to see holes and the pitting is really bad id shoot for a cutting it out and replacing it with fresh steel. make sure that you apply corrosion protection to the new patch or that will rust too. epoxy is an excellent choice to prevent rust from forming. but then again rust will reappear if you treat it only from one side. the proper way is to prevent rust from happening in the first place so always treat the inside of the panel with as much attention.
