What do most of you do when you blend into a panel that has severe moddling from a previous paint job? Just thought I would ask it, the last job of the day did that to me. Painted a fender and door on a f150 and everything blended fine but you can see moddling at the end of the panel. I know the insurance company won’t pay to carry it to next panel. And I don’t think it will even be that noticeable outside. But it still is irritating when it leaves.

November 30, 2012 at 4:43 pm #39487well my paint usually comes out mottled anyway, so my blends on GM’s are undetectable
AnonymousNovember 30, 2012 at 5:46 pm #39489lol, we would just carry on and blend into it. If it were extremely severe then we’d try and upsell to paint over it but if nobody’s going to pay then I don’t see any choice……oh and I also curse bondo’s name as it rolls in.
Having worked at GM, this was something we saw a lot in the factory paint. If it was bad enough you could adjust your air pressure, speed etc and make your paint mottle as well. Just pretend you are a first year apprentice trying to spray base really nice…the mottleyness will come automatically 🙂

That’s what we end up doing as well, except cursing bondos name. Not much you can really do when the customer won’t pay a little extra to fix it. Oh the joys of collision work.
December 2, 2012 at 9:42 am #39594As the others have mentioned, it’s ‘mottle’, not moddle. 😉
I’ll always try and upsell the paint if it’s private work, or if it’s insurance, we’ll fight to get the extra to blend into the next panel.
The above said, our obligation as a repairer is to return the car to ‘pre accident condition’ or better. If we’re not getting any more money, that means we have to reintroduce mottle to match existing mottle. Otherwise, the customer will likely complain that the two panels look different. Oh, we also document before and afters with photos. It hasn’t happened yet, but this gives us a leg to stand on if things go south.
