I recently did a base coat/clearcoat job on my car and noticed some of my bodywork doesn’t look correct. Can I sand them spots down, redo the body work and then paint, clear them again without doing the whole pannel? I have a quart of the original paint left. What if I wet sand and polish the areas, could that help?
September 22, 2011 at 6:33 am #33056Wet sanding and polishing will sometimes make the spot look worse, not better, really depends. If you opt to repair the area again, you might want to give it a day or two before you jump into it to give the fresh paint time to cure out. Sometimes you will have recoat issues. Check your tech sheets, most of the time it will tell you. What paint system are you using?

What kind of filler did you used? Have you primed the surface / applied surfacer ? You could fix them locally using blend-in reducer at the end but it really depends what kind of paint you’ve used if it’s metallic it might show some shadowing on the surface.
Ok, I haven’t done this for many years and always used Imron. This paint is a Napa brand ( Base Coat/ Clear Coat ) and a high red metallic. I already started wet sanding with 1500 to get the orange peel out. However I have a spot on my roof that you can see my bodywork on and want to fix it. If I wet sand the whole car ( makes a very nice smooth finish ) fix the spots and re paint them, then re clear the whole car will that work? I was going to wet sand and then polish but have enough clear left to reclear if neccesary.
I am in the process of wet sanding the whole car with 1500 grit. Would you reclear afterwards or just buff?
you said you still got the original basecoat left in a can or whatever… you can repair that spot you got on the roof. “lets say its on a corner or where ever it is at” fix that spot, prime it & sand it smooth. seal it and spray some of that base coat you still got left on it. then i would rather clear the whole roof than a butcher blend on it.
hope this helps,
HDzPS: why you wet sanding the whole car if your only concern is the roof spot? orange peel i suppose. just wondering.
and yes, you can either buff it or clear it. if you want to buff it, you could re-sand it with 2000 after your done with your 1500 sand paper. you could even go up to 3000. anyways you can buff after 1500. just make sure everything is nice and even cause you will definitely see any orange peel that you didnt sand once you buff it.
September 25, 2011 at 6:56 am #33131If your plan is to fix the bad spots then reclear, you could save yourself some time by going to 600 or 800 on a da. I think that reclearing over 1500 grit scratch might be a touch to fine, plus it makes it kinda hard to cut anything flat with 1500 grit.
