    Hello,
My name is Jeremiah, I was recently (4 months ago) hired to manage a local body shop. Long story short, I was working at a Cadillac/GMC dealer, which did not have a bodyshop. The owner of the dealership purchased a small business type bodyshop in the area and moved me out to manage it. I had 1.5 years of Collission Repair at a technical school, but shortly after school got into detailing, and eventually moved up into the Service Advisor role in the dealership.

The previous owners of the shop stayed on for 3 months in a consultant position, but I have been on my own for over a month now.

I’ll be looking on this site for advice and techniques on how to run a shop. I’ve got the gist of it, but the owner is number crunching BAD! and that’s my biggest thing, is how are we comparing to other shops.

We are direct repair shop for State Farm, American Family, Safeco, and Progressive (although that is changing soon :chair )

We have 1.5 painters (its funny to say it like that) 2.5 preppers and 2 body guys.
It’s a different game than the service department, that’s for sure!!

    Welcome to the site.

Your staffing seems a little odd to me, though. 4 in the paint side, 2 in the bodyside? Are the bodymen that fast or the painters that slow? Are your painters/preppers getting lots of small jobs, maybe spot repairs?

Hey Jeremiah, I was a Collision Center Manager for a Cadillac/Buick/GMC dealership for a few years. Great cars to work on. Does your dealership have IDL training?

It will sound like I’m stroking his ego but I’m not, one of our body guys could keep the 4 in the RF department busy by himself. He’s got God given talent like I’ve never seen before.

No on the IDL training, at this point our body shop is a separate business from the dealership.

I’m struggling with the output of my refinish department. I know I’ve got one guy not pulling his own weight, but he does a bunch of the grunt work that my other 2 guys (1 paint prepper, 1 painter/prepper) prefer not to do so they can keep stuff moving.

I’m putting together some numbers right now, I’ll start another thread as to not clutter this one, but I want to know where they stand as far as efficiency, and if I’m thinking about it the right way.

Thanks for the welcomes, and I really hope to learn alot from this site!

figure out how many hours they are doing each week (based on mitchell time, or what ever system you use) vs the hours worked. You can get a general idea over several weeks what their effeciency is
