In a word…no,you can’t polish something and make it more dull.what you need to do is experiment with a single stage black with different percentages of flattening agent to get the desired gloss.
Too much problems.. too much time..
Get hold on your paint supplier paint chips for flat colors and see what percentage of flattening agent you need to use.. Much better finish no haloing.. no flatter/shinier spots..
You will never get it to match..
I have tried it and it bit my a$$October 5, 2013 at 3:50 pm #44806As you’ve guessed, getting it even is likely to be impossible.
I’ve done it on small parts like door handles, trims, window frames etc that require a satin finish. Rather than messing around to match the gloss level with paint I’ve simply sprayed them matt then gradually polished them up to the right kind of sheen. I wouldn’t even think about trying to do the same with a body panel though.

And that worked well? (Smaller parts)
October 7, 2013 at 11:11 am #44823I wouldn’t describe it as proper technique but it worked fine on those small items, yes.
