Hello, I have a 3 car garage and wondered if I could make a home made spray booth like in my middle bay? I saw one once a guy made but it was quite some time ago. I think he studded up his middle bay and used heavy plastic and fans of some sort. I also was wondering what type of fuel I could safely heat my garage with and still possibly do some bodywork/painting over the winter. Up here in Pennsylvania it gets pretty cold and boring in the winter! I could keep busy and do one of my favorite hobbies!! Thanks as always! Jack

if you frame it up in such a way that replacing the plastic is easy, and use high powered fans (whatever CFM for the size of booth) and have actual paint booth filters going in and out, and have a metric buttload of good quality lights, and have a heat source isolated from the fumes, you can do pretty good work. I have had a couple of bad ones, and they have just pissed me off…

At the risk of being a buzz-kill, it’s easy to do it cheap – what Bobwires is saying is that it isn’t easy to do a quality job cheap. I’ve painted a few cars in my garage and continue to do so – it’s not easy and you’ll polish every job. I have drapes that I hang and a 9000 cfm fan to handle the fog. I use furnace filters and toss them out after each job. I need more light and have recently completed a complete air cooler to ensure dry air.

I’ve got a natural gas garage heater mounted to the ceiling and it is outside of the drapes. I’ve not had an issue (no explosions  so far). In the winter (I’m in Canada) – I turn the heat way up and then kill the furnace while I paint. As soon as I’m done and the booth is clear I turn the heat back on. It’s not perfect, but it works.

Thanks! It seems like I never have enough light in my garage when doing bodywork! If it’s nice out I prefer to do it in the driveway. Seems like the very few times I did all the bodywork inside the garage it showed when I pulled out in to the sunlight!
