I was just listening to Crash Talk. It airs on a Seattle station and the internet. Tony Lombardozzi with CCRE was just on there and they were discusisng how some woman moved a very short distance across town and her rates went thru the roof. This is Happens in the USA as well. Rates are based on where you live as well as what you drive and your driving record and many other variables. But I guess what bothered me was the fact that they were saying that most people have no idea what was in their policy, know absolutely nothing about the insurance industry and then made the comment that Canada had government issued insurance and just a couple of two or three companies.

I have been visiting Canada a lot as of late. I know I have seen insurance offices up there, just like here in the USA. I think what bothered me was the fact that hey were making Canada out to be pretty socialistic and the fact that they were saying nobody knows what they are talking about when it comes to insurance , when they seemed to know little about this subject. I have noticed several of you are Canadians on this site and would like to hear your thoughts on this subject. Am I wrong or are there a lot of insurance companies in Canada? And is insurance issued by the government?

There is a ton on insurance companies up here too. I don’t know much about the Government issues insurance, I am pretty sure it is only available in certain parts of the country. I am pretty sure it does not exist here in Ontario. I only work part time in the office so I don’t know all of the ins & outs, but I can tell you for sure there is a helluva lot more then 2 or 3 companies.

Justin, That is kind of what I thought. I have been in Calgary, Alberta, quite a lot lately. One of the shop owners I talked to briefly told me they require government licensing in that province. How is it in Ontario? Do they require schooling and or apprenticeships as well?

nope, you can pretty well fix a car with a 5th grade education here. The reputable shops will enforce it themselves, but I don’t know if I’d even want half the ticketed techs touching my car. Really hard to find qualified techs around here, no shortage of old hacks.

I think Alberta has one of the best apprenticeship training programs in the country.I have been in the industry going on 25 years and have seen many changes.A shortage of good techs is becoming the norm around here as well. Its funny now that I think about it when I started I worked with numerous talented “old guys”who knew there stuff inside and out and they were happy to share their knowledge and make sure we did it the right way..Now I am one of the old guys, just funny how time goes by even when you are not having fun.Jimmo it’s not like that every where, there are still some talented people in my area and the shop that I work at.I’m not sure what my point is,I think I might have had a few to many tonight.

lol, me too last night… !

I have come across a few really good older techs, we had one that ended up moving on to another shop. For the most part it seems to be a lot of hacks coming through my door & where I’ve worked in the past. You could send them out for training and they’d just come back telling you how stupid the training instructor is (which could be true, but you). Maybe my standards are just too high, I just want a bodyman that doesn’t use adhesion promoter as plastic cleaner…or can tell me what boron steel……or is familiar with proper sectioning procedures… I can even handle poor plastic work at this point, I’ve got good preppers.

We tossed a bodyman a little while back for trying to attatch a box side skin with 1k urethane (not the only reason, but probably a good one)….ya, the windshield stuff. I don’t understand how some guys have made it as far as they have.

:rofl I totally get what you are saying Jimmo,I have worked with many retards over the years.I have never claimed to be the best, but I try to do the best job that I can and I expect the others around me to do the same.At our shop the bodymen do all their own priming and prepping, the painters just mask the job, prepare our blend panel and spray them.I am a combo guy,if we are busy I will spray full time, but for the most part my time is evenly split between collision and painting.I do my own jobs start to finish, paint the ones where the customer is really picky, and fix the other painters mistakes.I have found that if the bodyman has to prep his own work they can’t just pass it off,if it looks like crap it’s there own fault. We have one guy who is a hack but he gets all the jobs that the customer wants fixed asap and don’t care what they look like.We always joke that he never fixes them,he just changes the appearence.

Stone, where are you at? And do you like working with apprentices? A group of us came up with a thing we call system three a lot of years ago where we run teams of three and occassionally key team members will join with other teams we called commando teams which would gang up on hard hits and big jobs. This system eliminated having to search for good techs and steal them away from the competition. It also reduced turn over of technicians. Most people here in the USA resist the idea, mainly because they are a bunch of cowboys and loners. Your thoughts?
