I am repainting an older ford that I have restored and the costomer requests that it be painted “Candy Apple Red”. Can anyone give me a basic idea of what i need and how I can create that affect. I know that true candy apple reds are sprayed over a base such as silver and therefore rematching in case of repairs is extremely difficult, so is there a stock color someone may suggest that might come close to what the customer wants.
These are what Bondo is still using to mix colours on with his lucite bench. I hear next year he’s upgrading to Centari :p
There is a website online that has a lot of the old books for referencing paint codes.

AnonymousMay 4, 2012 at 6:17 pm #36814I just painted a 67 mustange ford T (twice), which is called candy apple red. It was not an actual candy, just a solid red. When I pulled up the formula in Onyx the comp didn’t suggest a ground coat as it would normally on a transparent color so foolishly I assumed it was a rare well covering red….6 coats of paint later I checked it with the sun gun and thought I had full coverage, cleared it and when it went outside you could see the primer spots. 3 more coats and it was golden..haha lesson learned. Use a ground coat regardless. The owner I believe will be posting pictures soon.

[/quote]I would love to have access to some Centari. I’d like to see if is as good as I remember, or have my standards changed?

I have used some Centari, did a complete with it once as well. I thought it was pretty decent for Single stage and had awesome depth/gloss.

Did you add the 2000 pak?
I wonder if they even still make the 200 pak?

No, I just used it normal. Mixed it 8-1-2 I believe.
May 5, 2012 at 6:30 pm #36831Back in the day………it would put Autocryl to shame.
The new Sikkens LV650 is killer too.
May 6, 2012 at 1:47 am #36834A good semi gloss or flat black is utech 200 and you can play with how much flattening agent you put in to get your desired gloss.Autocryl rally black was awesome when I could get it  Centari better than autocryl  that is blasphemy :rofl
