Products used
Tahiti green basecoat(RM Diamont)
BC100(RM Diamont)
augusta green concentrate (SEM)
DC4000 clearcoat (PPG)the BC100 was reduced then the SEM was added at a 8:1 ratio, I put down 4 mid coats and couldnt achieve a proper finish, so I must redo the job but this time I will be going with the Carizzma line. I know JimC says it will take as many as 8-10 coats I believe, but I’m also wondering what size needle should be used(I use a SATA2000 1.3tip) air pressure and any other advice would be appreciated. Like I said it was close and I’m wondering if I would’ve had even coverage after a few more coats, maybe the SEM product didnt mix well with the BC100, should I have used the BC00 lol, so many questions and startin to ramble lol. Hopin JimC could chime in here.
By the way Im new here but loving the site very informative and helpful
thanks guys [

May 11, 2010 at 5:53 pm #21167Yea I see what you’re talking about with it being a little blotchy. But I will say that your job is a lot better than I would say 75% of the crap candies I see out there on the road. I spray candies with my Sata 3000 hvlp with the 1.3 tip and I don’t have a problem maybe it was just the SEM product or possibly you didn’t spray even enough? When I shoot my candies I try to walk the length of the car with each pass and I pull my gun back a little further than I would normally spray base, it seems to lay out a little more uniform that way. The carizzma line is good from what I hear so good luck with the re-do!
May 11, 2010 at 7:06 pm #21168My 2 cents are that the job turned out pretty good. While I do see the blotchiness, I’ve seen worse.
One thing that I’ve noticed for me is that the first few coats of candy need to be weaker than recommended to avoid the blotchiness. I make up my candy about half strength of what it should be, then lay down 3-4 coats, then I start making it stronger each successive coat ’til I get the color I wanted. The green base was a great idea also. I use both SEM and House of Kolor concentrates quite often. The first coats are critical.
My own stupidity for not doing a little research before spraying but like I said its very close to being acceptable thats 3 mid coats and I did a forth coat in the clear just to see if it would lay down more uniform for the hell of it. I didnt realize that you would have to put 7-10 coats, how many coats are you Kevin and IAMRICO putting down to achieve a uniform finish and how much of the binder do you guys figure you would go thru on a job like this?
Thanks for the input
May 12, 2010 at 5:11 am #21179ooooh man, you couldn’t have picked a harder color candy to spray either. i think green is the hardest one i have ever sprayed. i spray candy like very other day and can still have trouble with greens. be proud of yourself there. for your first candy job and it being green that came out great. the key with green is to mix that color really weak. take the concentration you had and cut it in half. break it up into a bunch more coats. like you said maybe even as much as 10. if you get the carizzma stuff with the bc00 you should have a little better luck anyway. their candies have a little more clarity. rm’s mix ratio is 3-4 parts bc00 to 1 part dye. for the green i would make it 6-8 parts 00 to 1 part dye. i will say that if you shot that car in yellow, red or orage it would have turned out awesome without a single blotch. difficulty really has alot to do with color choice.
thanks Jim C, wouldnt the final color be different if I would use a red, yellow or an orange, this car has previously been painted and in an accident so Im trying to keep the color as close to the color in the jams as possible although the customer isnt that worried about a perfect match. Jim how many coats do you guess a job like this would take and I was just gonna order a gallon of bc00 and probably a quart of dye. What would I expect to pay for a gallon of bcoo?
May 12, 2010 at 7:37 am #21183yea, looks good to me also. I’ve sprayed the urethane kandy from HOK, and it is a bitch for sure.

ya know kevin has a good point on this one i honestly think he has a good point for ya candy a$$es here 😉May 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm #21196haa! no i meant if the customer wanted the car candy red or yellow, etc. that it would have come out perfect, i didn’t mean the base color. red, yellow, orange are much easier candies to spray. i think a gallon of bc00 is like $200 and the dye is $75 a quart. if i were spraying that car, knowing that green was going to be a ***, i would start out mixing it at 8 parts 00 and 1 part dye. do a couple coats and see how its going. at that point if i felt it needed some more dye then goto 6 parts. to achieve your color in 3 coats is way too concentrated. if you got that color in 3 coats then you should get the color next time in about 7 or so. let us know what you decide and how it turns out.
Well guys I’ve been reading a lot of great reviews on the SPI products and I’m really leaning towards there base clear to shoot when I redo this car and thinking I will still use the SEM concentrate, big reason why is the cost factor, the diamont is really pricey from our jobber and from what I’ve read the SPI will be just as good of quality, only problem is the place I would order from only places orders about once a month and they put a order in recently so if anyone could possibly get me another source to order from that would be great, I live in Canada if that helps 😛
June 3, 2010 at 3:31 pm #21740spi sells direct. just call them and order. i would think if your jobber ordered recently he should have what you need. spi’s website is http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com. i’ve been using their stuff for probably 8 years now so pretty much everything in my galler is spi primer and clear with hok or diamont for color.
