Sorry to ask this question as it has been asked many times before I’m sure. But what a better place to ask than right here where all the painters hang out and discuss the ins and outs of this profession.

I am looking to buy a new gun. the one I have now was bought about 3 months ago and I have painted a few cars with it and just cant get the dang thing to spray as good as I want it to. I am using a Startingline HVLP by Devilibiss.

When I looked up the gun tonight it said that it was a good gun for the hobbyist, do it yourselfer, bla bla bla…. not really what I wanted to see. I am trying to paint cars here and do a good job. Not painting a trashcan, or graffiti.

I heard that some products you spray can make a job easier to apply than others.

Soooo, what gun should I buy that I can get great results from? Maybe I can use the one I have now for primers and buy a good one for CC’s.

Thanks for any input you have.

Well, there are a lot of good guns out there however they get pricey. I have used a sata NR2000 for a long time and it has been a great gun. Right now I am using an Iwata LPH400 with chrome and purple caps. I have always used HVLP guns. I did buy a Devilbiss CVI (its a compliant gun) and I dont care much for it. A lot of guys like the Sata RP. Its a good clear gun. I would personaly go with the Iwata or Sata NR3000 but thats just me. If you are serious about a painting you should spend a little more on a gun. It will be well worth it in the long run. 😉

    +1

It does seem you are a serious hobbyist, these are the guns I’d
buy for clearcoat, in order of more $ to les $.

    Sata RP 3000 1.3
    Iwata LPH400 1.4
Devilbiss GFG-670 Plus comes with 3 tips: 1.2,1.3,1.4

I’d get a separate gun for basecoat though. If you want only one gun for both BC/CC, get the Iwata. Use the silver cap for CC, and get a gold/purple cap for BC.

Compliant guns like GFG-670 and RP are better for clear. They
atomize better, they are faster and you can keep 8 inches from
    panel.

I use the 670 Plus gun for everything. Hell, I have five of them. I’ve used the Sata guns in the past along wih the Iwatas. They’re all good guns. It simply boils down to personal preference. I just like the way the Plus gun feels in my hand while spraying. My advice would be to pick a gun, crank it wide open, and get to painting. If you like the gun you picked, keep it. If not, pick another gun and sell the first one for pennies on the dollar :exci

Ditto on the Devilbiss 670 Plus gun its a Good gun I use it for Clear.
Wish I had a couple more! gee whiz Paintnfool 5 of them?

I also have a GTI for Base its also a good gun.

If I were to buy any new guns I would get a Sata 3000 RP just here good things about it from every one that has one.
I have heard a Sata RP compares to the 670 Plus But I dont know as I have never used a Sata yet.

I would like to try the Iwata for Base coats and see how good it really is for Metallics But before I buy one I will be sure to flat out were out my my little GTI before I spend $500-600 on another gun. dang there expensive! :cens

I’m a bit of a gun whore. I have a ton of them laying around. Tekna, CVI, Sata 2000, LPH 400,and the list goes on…Most of them are just sitting in my toolbox collecting dust. Since they came out with the Plus guns I just don’t use anything else. I have one for every different step in the painting process. Sealer, solids, metallics, tri-coats, and clear. I might be a little OCD when it comes to guns, but I never have to respray one due to metellic residue in my solid colors or a chunck of color in my pearl coat on tri-coats. I will say, it does take some practice to use the Plus gun on some colors but for the most part its a great gun.

Spraying clear with the Plus gun is kinda like spraying with RP:
    same speed, same fan.

In fact, I was going to get the Plus gun, but good a great deal on
a Sata RP so I got it.
However the Sata is well built and well-balanced, but parts can be
    pricey though.

seems like I have to pay 500 or 600 to get a good gun then??

    December 13, 2009 at 9:14 am #17788

    what about second hand guns?
is there any cons to buying someone used gun?

    December 13, 2009 at 6:21 pm #17797

Used guns are fine if you know about the guns condition.

If its a Sata that was dropped, you are likely going to pay $200 for a nozzle “kit”. Inspect the holes in fluid tip and cap, make sure they are round and even.

You can buy the Plus gun from Len for $287.95.

For Iwata you can et them new around $450 or used from ebay.

I would shy away from used guns. You never really know what your getting. If you know who the owner is that would be fine but from Ebay? There are some deals to be had, just be patient. I picked up a Sata wsb some time ago off Ebay that was listed wrong and nobody but me bid on it. Just be careful. I look on there all the time and very rarely do I see something that I think is a deal.

If you were going to get a Plus just buy a new one. They don’t cost that much new.

I was looking at the IWATA LPH-400 LVX and LVB. I don’t know the difference between the two. I want it for spraying clear. I see that there is a 1 lb difference between them in air pressure.

Is that really important when choosing a gun? I have a 60 gallon 12.85 @ 90 psi compressor.

    December 15, 2009 at 5:09 am #17880

If you want the Iwata to spray clear, get the silver cap (LV4?)

Orange (LVX) and purple (lvb) caps are basecoat caps.

the pressure difference is not important, the Iwata needs 9.5 cfm to operate and your compressor has 12.85 cfm.

I can’t say which gun would be best – I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and am waiting for my Iwata LPH-400 LVX to show up. I did get it on e-bay and for about 1/2 what they retail for, so good deals are there to be found.

Found this on eBay with out cup.
Your choice of 1.3 or 1.4 tip? What do you think? They are local to me so I can pick it up for free. Don’t know what tip I should get?

Is this a good gun or maybe I should get something different? I would like to get one gun for now and maybe change to another or add to my collection later on. I cant afford to get a high priced gun. Maybe somewhere in the range of 400 or mid 400’s. I see a few guns at $560!!! :exci

It seems that everyone is crazy about the Sada guns. Is that something I should look into?
