Hi,
I got this on the Fatboy I’m working on. It’s only on the right side and I first tried with chrome polish and then steel wool to no avail. Any suggestions?

December 10, 2009 at 12:40 am #17681What are we looking for? I see some corrosion on the cooling fins – but the rest looks fine. If it is chrome and chrome polish/steel wool (which is brutal on chrome) won’t touch it, I don’t know of anything that will make it look better. You could try to cut it with emery compound (then progress to rouge) and a felt wheel, but if it is pitted, this will just polish the pits.
December 10, 2009 at 2:27 am #17684its really hard to tell from the pic but it looks like water spots, overspray or maybe even the chrome is worn off showing the nickel under it??? if the chrome is worn showing the nickel then you can only rechrome the part.
December 10, 2009 at 4:04 am #17690OK I will try to take a better picture tomorrow outside. I can’t feel anything when I touch the area so it’s not pitted.

I don’t have the name of the stuff in front of me but if you go to a boat store they sell stuff that works really good for removing water spots. They also have this stuff I use on my out drive that removes calcium and hard water spots. Makes it look like new.
December 10, 2009 at 9:17 pm #17721OK, this is how it looks outside.

I guess there is nothing to do, except order a new one. Nobody around here to rechrome…

If it was mine I’d strip the anodizing ( HD easy off ) and just polish it, it requires a bit more maintenance to keep it clean, but cheaper than a new rocker box. I’ve stripped several pieces of anodized aluminum using the EZ off in the yellow can ( not the blue, although it smells nicer, it’s not as strong ). Let it sit about 15 mins, hit it with a SOS pad or equivalant, rinse repeat as necessary.
December 10, 2009 at 11:38 pm #17735thats chrome not anodize and cant be stripped off that easily. there is a layer of chrome then nickel and copper under it before you get to the actual metal. you can take it off and put it on a buffing wheel to see what you get. if that doesn’t do it you need to send it out or get a new one. if its expensive then its really no big deal to have it sent out for rechrome.
