Hello, this is my first post actually (with many more to follow surely). I just painted
my car with the following (4 days ago on Saturday:

1. Ford NA paint code
2. Dupont Nason Sealer (the cheap one)
3. Dupont Nason BC basecoat
4. Dupont Nason Value Clear

Everything laid perfectly well until I got to the clear coat. Orange peal like crazy
and dry in lots of places (it was 112 degrees in the paint booth).

Here is my question, I started wet sanding the clear today to try and get rid of the
orange peel. I sanded a little and squeegied and noticed little grey specks. Does this mean that I have not sanded enough and have not actually gotten the surface flat (assuming the whole thing should be a gray shade from the sanded clearcoat)? Thanks for any help and I will post
a picture of what I mean. I appreciate the help in advance.

yes …. does sound like you could sand alittle more … till the surface is flat

…thank you so much for that response. I did continue sanding and the surface is almost
flat. I will continue until it is flat or I see green (the car in question is the avatar
picture). Then I will sand the rest that shot very dry and then buff, buff, buff until
the showroom finish is achieved.

yup
😉 be sure to finish sanding with 2000 grit or finer and start with an agressive compound 😛

..ok, will do, thanks. I actually just finished buffing the one spot with a foan buffing
pad. I don’t know if I did it to long or used to much McGuire’s Compound Power Cleaner.
It has a little bit of a haze on it now, but I can see my self and it looks totally
different (better and more mirror like) than the rest of the car, even the parts that
don’t have bad orange peel or aren’t dry. Thanks for the help.

P.S., for some reason, I still cannot upload photos from home.

Be carefull not to rub through very easy to do.. wipe the water of with a squiggy pad every so often and check were your rubbing. 😉

Can you describe what it looks like when you rub through. I don’t think I have, but there is one section in the little spot I started on that look very fuzzy (compound got to dry I think) and it look lighter than the area right next to it. Maybe this will all change after it is polished with the wool pad. Thanks.

should use the wool pad first and finish with the foam ….. and if your photos are too big they won’t load …. may need to resize them :pcorn:

I have two questions:

1. I sanded a small section and buffed it for the first time as stated before.
I am going to attemtp to submit an image of it and see if this is the way it’s suppose
to look (hazy)?

2. I continued today sanding and just wanted to know if this is what it’s suppose to
look like, will try and submit a second photo.

Is this the way the clear sanding is suppose to look? It was a mily color the whole
time and I never got the base coat color. I apologize for asking so many questions, but I
am trying to do this right. Thanks in advance.

looks like sanded clear to me. what grit did you sand it with

July 3, 2010 at 6:00 am #22253

I did that with 800 grit because I am lazy and I was sanding three coats of clear….will
follow with 1500 and maybe 2000. That sound good?

Looks like you’re right track! And do go to 2000. Then 3000.
It is a lot of sanding and 3000 wont feel like you’re doing
much at all. And it almost seems pointless; but its not.
The extra few sanding steps makes the polishing session MUCH
easier going.
