hi guys my name is nigel im new on here,
so ive sprayed my 1st car recently, primer and base coat went perfectly, however after shooting the clear coat and allowing it to dry ive noticed its very very dull.now i understand that it was always gonna be dull and bumpy and would need wet sanding, compounding, and polishing to bring up a class like finish and shine.
however my uncle is a mechanic and often sprays cars and ive never seen one turn out as dull as this after the clear coat has been applied…
any ideas has to why this is the case guys?
nigel.
May 20, 2010 at 6:33 pm #21379i think the brand was dyna clear coat, ill have to check the tin to get a more correct description.but from what i remember it was a gloss clear coat.standard stuff.
could be quite a bit of reasons. maybe it dried too quickly. did you use the correct reducer and hardener for the temperature? did you wait for the proper flash time between coats? how did it look as soon as you were done? it shouild not change very much at all from the time you applied it to the time it dries. 😉
May 21, 2010 at 4:37 pm #214101)Did you buy the clear recently or has it been sitting around in the shed for awhile??
2)Is it dull as in the color of it is dull, or dull as in it laid grainy? (Gritty) Because clear you want to lay it wet, basically how you want the final result to look. There’s a very fine line between not enough, and too much

1)the clear was bought recently 2days before i sprayed it.
2)there is a shine off it very close, i guess it would be gritty/orange pealy.here’s a silly question but what is a good rule of thumb in regerds to knowing when the right amount of clear is on?
3)reducer and hardener instructions were followed to the exact amount.it says between 10&15 mins between coats and i followed that guideline.it looked good just not as much of a shine off it as i thought it would be.
i spoke to a few people yesterday, they said that they encountered the same issue and when they gave it another shot of clear a few days later it was perfect…
May 22, 2010 at 12:44 pm #21453the car I just got done with I had the same problem for the first two coats of clear and realized im not getting close enough. So I put it a couple inches closer and just slowed down a little bit and it definitely shined it better and helped flatten out some orange peel
May 22, 2010 at 3:10 pm #21454same as dude i readjusted my gun stayed a little closer and slow down and whata difference!glass like finish!what distance from the carwould you say your spraying at?
May 22, 2010 at 9:13 pm #21480i was always told 6-9 inches away from the car. i was too far back and was told ‘ your doing nothing but blowing it in the air ” lol.
May 23, 2010 at 7:19 am #21514It all depends what kind of gun you are using. For example an old JGA or MBC syphon feed devilbiss you will be 8-12 inches away, sata rp or rp 3000(that’s what I use)I am 3-5 inches away, devilbiss plus 5-6 inches away.Everybody sprays different so there is no right or wrong way, after you have more experience spraying and you are getting the results you want that’s all that matters.
ID SAY ABOUT 5-8 INCHES AWAY FROM THE PANNEL WILL PRODUCE THE BEST RESULTS AS FOR COATS I HAVENT GOT A BOOTH SO I USUALLY DO 1 DUST COAT AND 2 WET COATS THEN LEAVE TO DRY AND FLAT AND POLISH AND WALA!!! ;)
i just like the WALA :exci thats how i do it to 😉 :lol1 :lol1 - AuthorPosts
