Hello,
I’m new the site and judging by the videos seems like a very informative site .
My question. I have a 2009 Pontiac G8. It had a little dent in the front passenger fender and hood. My biggest gripe with the repair job is the clear coat looks milky ( just a little ) when the sun hits it at a certain angle. On a cloudy day you could never tell.I didn’t want them to paint the whole fender for I’m sure it would not match the rest of the car. It has very little orange peel which is good. Also the new paint ( hood and fender ) does not have as much metal flake as the factory color ( not sure why, maybe because these cars are built in Australia and maybe us different type of paint, not water base not sure . Factory color is called Panther Black Metallic. Not sure if anything can be done about the milky look, some have told me to wet sand it and buff it out, for the milkyness ( sp) is on the surface or will it eventually evaporate and clear up ????

Now if I decide to get it re-cleared, will the milkiness not still come through from the clear that is causing the milkiness now ? and I guess I’m still ticked off in why they could not get the same amount of metal flake sparkle in the new repaint.

I am going to throw a curve ball here
i think it is the colour that is wrong and perhaps not the clear coat.
Couple of things bring me to this conclusion.
1/ i have seen it happen before just recently on a nissan black, small repair on the front of the fender, base was blended within the panel, and the whole fender was clearcoated. Outside under bright sunlight i could see the front section of the fender was very milky compared to the rear section that had no base on it.
If the whole fender had been painted one would suppose it was the clearcoat at fault.
2/ you have stated that the flakes looks different so this suggest the colour is wrong.
Back to basics the colour has to be right before we start discussing the clearcoat.

The fender that was just cleared is cleared over the factory finish. Only part of the fender that was base coated is the very front tip and then cleared. I told them to do that way cause I feared for a poor color match and thinking clear is clear and It will look good. I take it they just scuffed the remaining factory clear and cleared away.
So where you see the cloudy look is basically were they would of scuffed the factory clear and recleared.
Hope that makes sense.

Andy[/quote]Okay you are assuming they did what you asked.
Is it just the very tip of the fender that you can see a difference in the laydown of the flakes, reason i ask is unless the colour is way of. The eye can usually be tricked into not seeing the base blend, in particular on dark colours.
It could also be a poor quality clearcoat was used, sometimes cheap high solid clearcoats have issue’s in the clarity of the clearness, lol if there is such a word.
The base coat ( original factory base ) of the fender is fine you can tell at certain angles the flake is the same as the door. I know for a fact they did not base coat the whole fender only the very front of it and of course after base coating they had to clear the whole fender. But I think you hit the nail on the head with cheap clear coat or maybe they used to much reducer ( not sure if that is the correct term ) or shoved the car into the oven to fast.

nm, it is the line from the reflection that the car next to your car is projecting. The line between the door and quarter panel makes it look like a burn through.
Wetsand and buff should handle this.
If it doesnt it will need to be repainted, if the clear turns milky, from my experience and it is milky throughout, it will need to be based over, blended into the next door.
