Seems lately, when I apply PPG 2002 It looks perfect as I spray but, before it tacks it is attracting some airborne contaminate. Nothing major… buffs out easily but, I’d rather not have it. In a clean booth with excellent filtered air movement. Could it be static from ahop air? Should
I be using some kind of inline ionizer. Seems like it just started in the last month or soFebruary 23, 2013 at 4:50 pm #41587Welcome to the forum! I use an Ionix static eliminator, and I also ground my parts to a gas line and have an air hose with a ground wire in side. http://www.ionixtechnologies.com/Autorefinishing.html It helps but I too get specks in clear. I really believe the Ionix unit helps, notice that they ask you to prep with very low air pressure. Bill

February 23, 2013 at 5:04 pm #41591Eliminating static may help, however if this is a new problem what has changed? why suddenly is there more static. are you getting debris in the base as well. I would really look into another cause as well. figure out what is suddenly different in the last month or so. does this happen with any other clears you use? Bad batch of hardener, old filter coming apart…..
February 23, 2013 at 7:04 pm #41594Where do you live? I noticed down here in Florida the static just started getting bad in the last month or so as well. Air is dry.
February 23, 2013 at 9:36 pm #41600I am in North Carolina.
I did scrub the spray area walls, floor, ceilings, changed all the filters. It may be the lower ambient temps here lately. I have been using the shop heat but it is filtered, as well. Maybe the dryness from the heat?

February 23, 2013 at 9:47 pm #41601I usually blow off with shop air at 90PSI. I never gave it a thought.
I use PPG 2002 clear almost exclusively. Some Omni clear has been in the booth.
February 23, 2013 at 11:16 pm #41605I was having the same problems and asked a similar question here. As suggested i got some water based cleaner and wipe it with that, it helps cut the static down a lot.
February 25, 2013 at 5:17 pm #41649Reducing the blow off air pressure will help. I started wiping down with 97% alchoal. I was using a solvent cleaner GONE and I could hear the static crackling on the part. I switched to the alchol and it stopped the crackle. I believe the alchohol is water soluble. It will mix with water. Also, use prep wipes made for automotive paint. I was using plain paper towels, and the automotive wipes from Keystone are cleaner. Bill

There was a thread a couple weeks ago about black specs in the clear.[/quote]:agree
Another thing painters do is leave the spray line in the booth when the bake cycle is active. That’s a big no-no.
Also, i change out my spray line and spray suit every 6 months.
Do you wipe your spray line down with an old tack rag prior to, and in between coats? What about your spray suit…how old is that?
March 9, 2013 at 4:58 am #42000I personally don’t think it is a static issue, but if for some reason it is, I believe transtar makes a new waterborne wax and grease remover called Aquascat. It comes in a spray bottle and has a static eliminator built in to it.
Eliminating static may help, however if this is a new problem what has changed?
