I will be repainting my audi URQ in the next few weeks and would like to see can this be done.
I will be painting the car in a solid 2k white paint.
Is it possible to paint a few layers of clearcoat lacquer over the solid to give it extra shine?
Just curious as I have a few cans of 2k lacquer lying around in the shed.
    Any help appriciated 😉

YES you can put clear coat over a solid color.if the hardener is the same as the hardener you are putting in the clear coat you can spray it all in one go.Three coats of white ,let tack of .Then two coats of clear coat.Or you can flat the white when dry ,then clear coat it.The only problem with flatting the white ,you are going to have to make sure there is no marks or dirty finger prints on the white.

Is it not acceptable to use G&W remover?

    Thanks guys 😉
If I was to let the white dry and flat the paint, Could I not use a panel wipe to clean the lot before lacquer?
Surely that would get rid of any dirt or prints

I would panel wipe a week later ,because if you do it the next day or three .The panel wipe will soften up the 2k paint.its quiet strong in its substance .If you want to play it safe what i use is water base panel wipe.it does not soften the paint up.

It will sink if you do it this way, though it will still polish up okay.

The clear just sinks into the solid colour, this is because the solid colour is still too wet and the clear just travels down and into the solid colour.

I would either stick with just painting it solid white. Or buy white base and base and clear it.

The other way means prepping the whole vehicle twice and full re-mask

Unless you already have your solid white just do as suggested and go base & clear 🙂

yeah I already have solid white 2k and clearcoat left from other projects that I never ended up doing.
That was my main reason I asked as I was just thinking it would have given slighty extra shine over a standard white paint finish and it would also save me buying white basecoat (probably me being a cheapass)

OK then, if you already have the paint then there’s no reason why you can’t clear over your white, but firstly you don’t really have a lot to gain from doing so, and second you’ve got to think about how much money you’re actually going to save.

Yes you’ll have to buy some white base instead of using what you have, but as Nick says if you go 2K white and then clear it you’ll have to prep it twice, mask it twice, paint it twice etc etc. which all costs time and money 🙂

Either stick with just the 2K white, or go base & clear.
