hello all, bondomerchant, and jimmo i follow you guys closely and love the quality of your work. now my question is as stated above, can you clear over single stage? if so what clear do you or would you use? dont wanna snub anybody so HELLO to any and every body!!! :silly:
November 17, 2009 at 2:34 am #17016are you spraying the single stage then wanting to clear, or is the car already painted and you want to add a clear on top. Either way it can be done with no problems. If the car has already been painted then you just need to sand it to prep it for clear. I would wet sand it with 600 and get the nooks and crannies with a grey scuff pad and sanding paste. Just be careful so you dont sand through any areas.
If you are planning on painting it single stage then clearing i would just go with a base/clear system instead.
And Welcome to the forum. we gotta talk about this jimmo and bondo doing quality work thing though :rofl dont want to give them a big head 😉AnonymousNovember 17, 2009 at 2:57 am #17018ding wrote:

If your letting the SS dry, rescuffing/sanding and clearing I can’t see why you’d have any problems. If your doing it wet on wet just make sure you use compatable products. I’ve heard if it the clear uses the same hardener as your SS it should be fine and would think that to be true, but I don’t know for sure. I use the BASF SS and clear which specifies what clears you can use wet over the BASF SS , making it pretty foolproof. I’ve done it with UNO singlestage and I beleive it was DC92 and also maybe DC5300 clear in the past and never had anything come back on it. I’ve heard guys say that if you use a clear wet on wet that is incompatible it will start to delaminate in a few months.
November 17, 2009 at 3:16 am #17021I have always just let my single stage set overnight and then without scuffing come back the next morning or afternoon and shoot my clear right on top of it.. Works like a charm.. I was taught this by a chemist for the majors.. Said it would never fail doing it like this.. I always have and never had any issue’s.. Funny thread.. I shot single stage today.. and
Welcome to the board.. Great place, outstanding people!!!

Enamels stay soft, almost forever.
If it’s urethane, then any urethane clear coat works great.Big difference between enamel and urethane, both are single stage paints
but both are very different.
I cleared my daily driver that I used urethane on, that was 3 yrs ago and it
has been much more durable than anything I have ever used.
Not a single chip on the sides yet.
I waited overnight to clear it, no scuffing needed.Stay away from enamels-they’re junk compared to urethanes.
