I need to paint the wheels on my car as they are starting to look a little shabby. I haven’t painted to many wheels and am having a hard time finding the color for them. It is a Lexus wheel and the color is called Medium Smoked Hyper Silver.
Here is a pic I found on the internet to give an idea.
If anyone has any ideas feel free to let me know. I’m kinda at a loss.
Attachments:February 9, 2010 at 2:12 pm #19410I need help finding the color for them. I know how to paint them.
The color has a different look to it and I’m not sure if there is a color available or they have to be powdercoated. I was asking because maybe someone else has had to paint a wheel this color before.
I would check with a dealer to find some leads there.. I would also goto my local powder coater and see if they can match it. I am a big fan of powder coating recently, especially rims.

February 11, 2010 at 9:41 pm #19478I realise you are Spies Hecker man Bryan, but that wheel finish looks a whole lot like Glasurit Velvet Silver that goes over a black base.
February 11, 2010 at 10:01 pm #19481I’m Spies no more! I spray Sikkens Autowave now. You have anymore info on the velvet silver?
February 12, 2010 at 4:52 am #19490I guess I never thought about it on the rims I’ve painted. I’ve sandblasted off chrome and shot polyprimer to prep for paint, ground down and filled in corroded aluminum, all sorts of time-wasting projects, but never worried too much about the paint code.
couldn’t you find something close and seal and paint? sounds like you want an exact color, but I’ve never seen a wheel paint code in my life…. I haven’t been around long….

February 12, 2010 at 4:51 pm #19500that velvet silver is probably the same as rm’s ultra flash flake. both basf so its probably same product with 2 different labels. i think the flash flake will come out really close to that but maybe a tad brighter. you could put a few drops of black in it to make it slightly darker then i think you’ll be right on. problem with powdercoat and any of the chrome/shiny colors is they always look lumpy. powdercoat is always thick and it never gives you a real smooth looking surface…atleast not like paint does. the mirrored colored powders just amplify that and tend to look like poo.

The bumpers had some grit because I had them put a silver flake in it. The rims went gloss black and and looks amazingly smooth. That being said its close to paint, but probably still not as smooth as it could be. In the end the durability factor won me over i think :P. So if you want ultra smooth, I’d do paint
February 12, 2010 at 8:09 pm #19506Thanks Stone, you beat me to it and Jim C, I’m sure you are right Ultra Flash Flake is bound to be the same stuff.
