We have had a bad couple of days at our workshop this week, all was well till wednesday afternoon when we painted a nissan micra all over in silver and a bonnet or a new golf.both had really bad silicon type fish eyes ! Next day we cleaned the booth changed airlines and filters to new ones as we thought it was water coming through but no joy 4 jobs painted today and still the same with varying degrees from just a few to really bad fish eyes on all every part of panel, also opened a new different clear for todays jobs.there is a mechanics shop next door and noticed him using a maintenance spray today and could really smell it too but a guy who works with us swears it shouldnt cause us any problems and also they must use those products daily and not caused us probs before.not sure what to do next really to get rid of the problem, funny thing is we repainted a range rover all over monday and it was one of best jobs we have done for a while so its a mystery.any ideas on how to get to the bottom of this folks or tips at least please, thanks, carl.

    3. Gun maintenance
    4. Gun lubrication
    5. Diesel fumes / exhausts
    6. Humidity

Hi guys, they said next door have used it for years so cant be that,we use the same waxes as we have for years and use no aeresole cleaners or new products just incase.we thought about the humidity thing as the filters are getting more water than normal thats why i empty filter and compressor several times a day but we fitted new filter and used new air lines and still the same.its a freaking nightmare as all redos means we aint doing the other work and we are really busy, just hope it settles down after bank holiday.has anyone used the drops for this problem ? Ive heard it contaminates everything so you have to keep useing it ? Is this true ? :headsmack:

Try not to use fisheye eliminator, it will actually cause fisheyes.I know of a shop in my area thats so contaninated they have to use fisheye eliminator in everything even primer. More than likely its an airbourn issue,it should be gone in a couple of days.

Fish eye eliminator can be a band aid fix to help you until you figure it out. Most fish eye eliminator contains silicon, and that can result in you possibly needing it in the future. I have used some before without I’ll effects later.

One option that may work is to use the silicon free fish eye eliminator. I know off hand that DuPont has one. It is not as potent as the stuff with silicon.

In any case, if the fisheyes are bad enough, no amount of fish eye eliminator will cure your problem.

You’ll need to follow the clues to find out where they are coming from. If they are all over every job it is probably from the booth or gun/air hose. When you get them, can you see any contamination (a small spec in the centre of the fish eye). When you spray, do you get fish eyes right away in the first cost or do they appear in later coats?

Do you have a piston type compressor? Is it possibly blowing oil by? Is there anything you’ve changed where it may be coming for yourself ( fabric softener, cologne etc can potentially cause fish eyes)?

    I appreciate your imput guys
Firstly we have built a new booth home made but works well And this is next to our old booth which will be pulled down so to make more space in our workshop, also we are are having a general clean up and throwing all the clutter you seem to gather in a busy shop ( you guys know what i mean old panels, bumpers lights etc…) so we thought maybe something may have been disturbed but if so why did we do a full range rover paint all over and was mint ?
Secondly, today i spoke to our other neighbour who does pdr and smaller paint and repair jobs and he had the same issue thursday but painted a hood late friday evening and only had one or two which is probably normal without a booth so im thinking its an outside contaminate.i just hope it wears off over our holiday weekend and tuesday its clear again.if not we may have to try that dupont anti silicon drops.

Ben,cant see anything In center of them but noticed in the last job they were smaller than the other jobs but definately fish eyes as they were deep, they came up straight away in first coat of clear and also i didnt hammer it on too wet thinking it may help. I havent used any deoderant or after shave or fabric softener thats any different to before, the compressor is fairly new and has not lost a drop of oil or at least does not need topping up.carl.

like ben said, your compressor may be starting to go and you are getting oil in the lines. I usually have an inline oil/water sepatator and an air filter on my gun and I never have problems. I see it catch water that gets by my compressor regulator filter. The gun is a bit bulky with 3 things hanging off (oil water sepatator, inline air filter and gun regulator) but I use it on humid days and it works.

Is it one of those filter bombs you use ? On the last job we did i used one of those glass gun filters and it ws the same mate.

On the subject of contamination I noticed yellow dust on the cars today. So begins 3-4 weeks of hell as pine pollen covers everything in sight. Every jobs to be thoroughly washed immediately before going in to the booth, booth dors only opened for as long as it takes the get the job in/out, outer shop doors kept closed, double prepsol everything and still get tiny fisheyes all over the job. I can deal with the cold but there is no escaping this stuff.

Sounds like a right beotch mate,we got a large tree outside our unit and sheds these caterpilla type things everywhere, its a nightmare.
We sorted our problem out,the guy who fitted new air lines and filter forgot about the one after compressor which was getting a bashing and was full of water, removed this and all is well again.
