Sounds like your kicking *** there. If your hustling you are about right. I paint 2-4 on avg a day. If I am doing bumpers or parts off the car I would say 6 wouldn’t be bad. Some days it seem 2 is a chore. Really depends on the job. I have worked at shops where I ran two booths and all I did was mix paint, wipe down and spray. I could push 12 if I had to. Things had to be clicking though.

How are you masking jambs if you dont use paper?
i use that 3m foam tape, ill take a pic of a good example for you, saves a lot of time, now that i dont use paper it takes me no time to mask, my spies rep gave me a few pointers when i started working there, im glad to hear im painting around the ave. amount of cars

I would say you turn out more than the average painter does.

Ya post up some tips, I’m sure everybody would be interested including myself.

I use to use the foam tape but I hate the glue residue that it can leave sometimes.I think a better way to do it is to use the EZ edger,it will fold the edge over on a regular roll of tape and it leaves a soft edge.Check it out on the web if you can,Ryan has a way to do it with out the machinine but I can’t make it work :compsmash

i agree the foam tape does leave a residue and besides that i find it comes loose around corners but sometimes its too late to notice :chair. i never tried the tape folding method, how do you do it??

I use the foam tape and like it for speed..but it can bite you in the a$$ when it lifts or leaves residue. Best to remove it ASAP after baking or when the paint is tack free.

We didn’t use foam tape at 1 shop. I had a girl working with me who was great at making soft edges for the jamb. She was good and quick at it. I could do it, just not as fast.

I think the trick is to rub your finger over the tape (or rub it over your coveralls) so it isn’t quite so tacky, then fold about 1/8″ of tape over itself so when you tape it down that 1/8″ end of the tape won’t stick to the panel and lifts up a tiny bit. Takes some getting used to, but works great (especially if your boss is too cheap to buy foam tape).
i use that 3m foam tape,
Agreed, i have been using foam tape that long i honestly have forgotten how to do it any other way  .

Been using it for nearly 20 years now.

3m make the best one i have tried many different one’s and have always reverted back to 3m

It can lift on the corners if pulled to tight.

When it is applied too tight it will most certainly lift as soon as it has some heat on it.

3m had a really good patent on that tape for many years, people tried to come up with simliar product’s but they never caught on. 3 m must have made a lot of money out that tape.

i buy 5 boxes at a time gets the price down a bit

Good video. That is basically what we would do. So this edger thing attaches to the masking machine?

    November 27, 2010 at 2:04 am #25589

it can be mounted to the masking machine or you can just hold it. To be honest I have the machine and rarely use it. It is faster for me to do it by [strike]hand[/strike], I mean manually (ding your a prick).

I have been messing around with using the foam and the folded tape lately. I always get nasty lines using foam or have sealer creep so I am not a huge fan. I have been running my edge tape and attaching my foam to the opposing panel just to seal the overspray. Not sure if it’s any faster or not.

Any of you guys use the 3m smooth transition tape? I find that stuff to be far better. I use it in combination with the foam tape. I use the transition tape to mask the edge and the foam to seal the gaps. I dpnt know about it being faster but it yeilds a cleaner job anyway. Whenever i use the foam tape i find the clear bridges up onto the foam in some spots leaving a rough edge.

    November 27, 2010 at 5:57 am #25595

Yes I have used the 3m transition tape,it is a good idea but it also leaves residue at times or the clear can bridge up to the glued portion of the tape. The best thing I have found is the EZ edger, for about $60 and a roll of 3/4 inch tape that you always have in the shop it is a no brainer.Once you use it there is no need for foam tape or the transition tape IMHO.

    November 27, 2010 at 6:17 am #25596

I have tried the transition tape also. I find the folded 3/4 tape works better. I like the transition tape on doglegs since the folded tape wants to lay down too tight.

If you know how to place the folded tape it can do a little better job. Sometimes you need a little more room than the transition tape allows.

I find that I use both, just the folded tape more. I have been trying the same as you Jim and using the two tapes together. For certain areas of the car the foam is faster for masking, and some it is just as fast to put a piece of six inch paper in there.

i havent had a problem with a bad edge with foam tape and i only use 3M because of lifting with other foam tapes, and i make sure i clean with a waterborn wax a grease remover like the one ppg has that smells more like rubbing alc., while on the topic of masking how r you guys masking to “burn in clear”?? not a practice i like to do but am forced to here and there
