Man im not sure if im happy or not that i found this site. I have lots of experiance with PPG Envirobase, i love it. Now i found myself here looking for tips as my new shop is sprayng cromax, and well you guys have me slightly araid of it…lol. Is there any thing good to say about it? or should i suggest PPG to them? lol
welcome to the zoo danny 😉 :welcWelome to the site. And as far as being afraid of it, don’t be. Everyone has their preference of products and good and bad can be said for all.
I’ve used the Cromax with excellent success. The only weakness I found was some colour matches. The product covers, sprays and blends well. I also found that it dried quickly and was fairly easy to sand imperfections (such as dust nibs).
Earlier in the post someone mentioned the Sherwin Williams waterborne as a far superior product, where as I feel the opposite and cannot get the SW product to work for me at all. Give it a good honest shot and I am sure you will have success.
August 3, 2010 at 4:56 pm #23502I have sprayed alot of Cromax. Recoatability is a major issue with it. If you have to put anymore on after your 1.5 coats have dried it will die back on you. Color match was less than stellar.
December 24, 2010 at 7:23 am #26404I’ve been spraying cromax for 4yrs now. It works great. have you taken any training on how it works.it sounds like you didn’t.Had a few problems with color match, nothings perfect.
yes the autowave is very user friendly but i found the autobase + seemed to be a much “cleaner” base, especially with blacks.
And the 250 clear is excellent imo, and you will use about 20-30% less than what you would with the HSLV. sikkens also has a speed clear which is fairly new called energy pro250 which is not bad all all, especially with non booth conditions. the 250 line is great all aroundDecember 24, 2010 at 10:32 pm #26425I have no complaints about autowave,it is extremely easy to use and color match is second to none.I don’t find the tinters dirty at all,one thing to keep in mind is to treat 245 black tinter differently, you need to manually stir it for at least a minute before putting ot on the bench, this will cut down on shmag in the can. Also treat all of the 888 metalic toners the same way.
Energy pro 250 is a nice quick clear but it is identical to the lesonal pro-air lv,same stuff in a different can.One tip that was given to me by the training center is to use superior 250 hardener in place of the energy pro hardener,it totally changes the way it sprays, much nicer product when you change the hardener. We have been using it this way since last summer.

If that’s directed for me I went to the training center for it. I liked Cromax, but it had too many downfalls imo. Nobody’s color match is perfect but Cromax is pretty shitty in that department. I remember a lot of times I wouldn’t have a variant that was hardly even tintable. If one did look good it would have the wrong metallic in it. I really liked the application and speed of it though. If they fixed the recoatability of it and the color match it would be a great basecoat.
I agree with Jayson, I don’t find Autowave dirty at all. To be honest if I could change something with Autowave I don’t think there would be anything.

Interesting advice i will give it a try.
Hello friends. I am new to this forum and also new to cromax pro.I am an experienced painter of 25 years and i have to be honest to say i have trouble with silver metallic blends. i currently took a job at carmax where i only have 36 minutes to get a car sprayed and out of the booth.this was my first week in paint being thrown to the wolfs with no tech training. The handfull of silver jobs i sprayed looked very bad on the blend edge even using 2091 blender. should i blend first over 2091 then recoat with 2091 and blend again? I need a little input on this! booth conditions are 75 degrees and about 20% humidity using 2045 controller. thanx!
