I was hired to be the painter, but do to the large volume of bodywork/large jobs and having only 1 bodyman, I’ve been doing mainly bodywork for the last couple of weeks. I’ve done some big hail jobs and currently have a few. One more big one to come in soon as well…

Civic, new hood, roof, trunk, lt fender. Repair both 1/4s & 2 doors. With blend panels it is a complete (minus the bumpers)

This is a shot of the shop/booth. The truck in the back is a hail repair on the roof, boxsides and fenders.

This is a suzuki. Replaced roof, hood, rt fender and doors. Repaired rt 1/4 and tailgate

Needless to say, my arm/shoulder is a little sore and we’ve been going through a lot of putty and primer.

Sounds like lots of roof replacements. Must have been some nasty hail. You guys don’t get forced into having PDR done on your hail jobs?

When we get hail out here it is generally pretty bad, lots of damage to buildings and vehicles. A big hail storm usually backs bodyshops up for months. PDR guys come up here from all over the country and even several from the U.S.

Lots of cars do get PDR, and lots of cars get a mix of both. A lot of the hail is too bad for PDR. A roof on a F-250 we have in has over 500 dents on it, the ones in my pictures had hail in size from golf ball and up. Lots of smashed windshields/backglass.

The hail storm was in early august and actually only covered a small area (mostly NW calgary and a little into NE calgary). There are some pics of the aftermath here

Typically jobs get PDR where possible, then often the hoods are replaced (then blend fenders). Really depends on the direction the hail hit the car and the severity. Lots of replacement panels, and sometimes repairs (like the panels in my pics). Generally we only repair panels that are severe, but too expensive to replace. Most involve stripping the panel, pulling the dents out then skimming the entire panel.

Hey Ben, how do you like the Spray Tech booth?
Hey Ben, how do you like the Spray Tech booth?
I’ve never used one before, but it is a nice booth. The lighting is good, the doors seem durable and seal well, the digital control panel is nice and very easy to use. It has really good airflow and the heat is fairly quick (even in the colder weather).

Only quirky thing is it is a reverse cross draft (exhaust filters at the door side). And with the way the filters are located, there is a ton of airflow across the sides of the booth, but not as much across the centre. Painting horizontal panels (hoods/roofs) take longer to flash off because of this.

Thanks Ben for the reply. I have been looking into getting a new downdraft booth and the Spray Tech was on the top of my list. I just have to wait a while because they are not cheap.

I would obviously prefer a down draft as well…

Overall I am happy with it, I don’t know what it cost, but I assume it would be a little cheaper than a GFS or Garmat booth.

I like the high ceilings in the shop there. That is the worst hail damage I have ever seen.. WOW!

We had alot of hail as well over the summer, lots of work for months. When your replacing the roof skins do you paint yours on or off the vehicle. We started painting ours off the vehicle when ever possible. Paint them, panel bond them on the next day, put a couple of welds on the corners and its done, alot easier than standing on ladders benches and crap.

thats an interesting approach. what do u use to protect the welds?

I can’t speak for him…I never changed a roof. but when we weld panels. It has to be clean shiny to weld. Keep the welds to a min. that glue works. . Spray bomb weld through?. Dab it with brush prime? Good question?
