I recently had a car towed into my shop late one Friday afternoon. I received the estimate from the insurance company via email prior to the cars arrival. It listed “Days to Repair” as seven. We started the repairs on Monday and were going to finish around 6 on the following Friday. The customer called around 5 and demanded their car back or they wanted a refund in money due to the late return. I explained the car was not late and we were working over to get it to them that day anyway. I was under the assumption that I had 7 business days to repair not calendar days. Do I include weekends and holidays in the repair time or just days when the shop is open. At this point I have not heard anything from the adjuster who the customer called and complained to.
July 22, 2014 at 3:01 am #47016IMHO is 7 business days, you just finish the car and deliver it as agreed, I will not give the car if no money is exchanged, but them again I might be wrong, I hope some one with more expertise in the matter will show up and provide us with his/their expert opinion :cens :cheers
July 22, 2014 at 6:14 am #47019Agreed,7 business days,we all know about the customer is always right but there are limits to what a shop has to take. You were in the right and the customer was uninformed, you probably haven’t heard anything as the adjuster more than likely explained it to the customer.
July 22, 2014 at 3:01 pm #47024You exactly correct. The adjuster agreed with me and told the customer I was not doing anything wrong and should be allowed ample time to complete the work. He told me the car will be on time as long as it is delivered within the 7 business days. The customer called sheepishly and asked when her car would be ready.

Agreed. Your estimate is based on a visual inspection and there is often stuff that comes to light after dismantling. Owner doesn’t get to see the supplementaries so the initial time estimate can be out by an enormous amount. That’s not counting things like parts that are out of stock or other things out of your control. Seems sorted anyway. Strange how often customers don’t understand repair times. I had one today who I told that the job would take two days. She said “Oh good. I can drop it lunchtime and pick it up lunchtime the next day”. :S
