I do on-site repairs for dealerships and the occasional retail customer. So far I have been pretty blessed with the final results of my work with out having to color sand nibs. My question, is how often do you guys in a booth have to deal with debris in your clear? Do you colorsand everything that you shoot or as needed? I love to watch a talented bodyshop painter, it is true artistry. Most people don’t understand that painting is more than just squirting on some color and “whatever that shiney stuff is on top”.

I denib & buff pretty much everything also. Most customers would never see what I take out.

depends on the job. Used car stuff we don’t get too fussy with, customer cars we remove anything that catches the eye. Really small specs we don’t tend to worry too much about.

Today, I had to fight cottonwood fluff. As soon as the clear goes on you have a hairy paint job. Frustrating.

About 95% of the time, the job needs a denib and finesse. It’s always calculated in insurance work too.

One of the reasons why i spend so much time perfecting my cut n’ buff technique! 🙂

Yes, we have to buff most of our jobs. It’s usually only small dirt specs or the occasional run, but luckily I have one of my team dedicated to finishing work, so I don’t have to do it myself 😉

Very rare we buff but we change filters religously.

We flat and polish every job.

Note how i say flat and polish and not nessacarly denib and polish, saying that there is usally a bit of dirt somewhere 😉 .

I dont care how clean the booth is or how cllean the painter gets the job, a newly painted surface still has that slightly raw look.

And a good burn up with compound takes that just been painted look away. And i also usally like to compond the first few inches of the adjacent panels, just to further the look of a relativlely untouched vehicle.

I do no shops that get pretty clean work and dont compound and polish anything, they get away with it 9 times out of ten.

But there is always that one time and customer complaints really get up my nose  so i try my best to eradicate any possibility of an unhappy customer.
