I sprayed the side of an isuzu trooper today, layed down my base 5 min. between coats. First coat of clear, Perfect. 5 min. later, second coat. Looked great when i walked out of the booth, no runs no dirt. walked back in hour or so later, and clear died back only where i blended my color out. Front door and quarter panel, not on the rear door where the repair was. has anyone had this issue? Im using diamont rm, dc5600 clear, dh46 hardner, and ur60 reducer. Temp in the booth was between 70 and 75 degrees. Ive exprienced die back before. Usually on the actual repair panel, but never where i only blended my color.
used RM clear for years … little to no advantage so use cheaper clear now and spend the money making it look good  dc98 holds out real nice, but can’t recoat or buff for 2 days, bite the bullet, use a quicky, and buff it out. :kofee
ps. I think all the clear comes from one place and the differences are minimal :kofee
November 5, 2010 at 5:01 am #24943Are you for real stone??That is the biggest load of crap I have heard :rofl Maybe that’s how your system is but that is just not true. Why would you use a crappy clear and then spend hrs buffing it to look nice, that makes no sense but to each his own :stoned
Think Im gonna use the dc92. I think the dc5300 is gonna be to slow. The dc5600 is alittle to fast for me. As for cost on clear, not an issue in our shop. We put out quality work, and I think a quality product must be used to achive that, also our name is on the job, as well as a warranty for the job. Im not a lazy painter who has the mindset that a buffer will fix the problem, not my style. (no pun intended). Although I may have found my problem. I used dbc500 color blender before my basecoat rather then the bc100. (dont ask why). Then used diamont base and clear. Could my problem lie there. I use a reverse blend with a drop coat, My base melted in with the base, but could it have just sat on top of my color blender rather than melting in there too. Just a thought. Alittle side note; We just switched from dbc to diamont.
November 5, 2010 at 5:17 am #24945How long do you let your sealer flash, how long do you let your base flash before clearing? Are you baking? Are you using accelerator? These things can cause dieback.
I dont use sealer, I finish everything in 600 wet, its a heated booth(no baking), No accelerator. About 5 min. between coats, and 10min. before clear. Like I said, it didnt dieback on the repair panel, only where I blended my color. Doesnt make sense to me. No solvents where I blended, a ton where I covered. Usually its on your coverage area. Which makes me think its possibly the base sitting on top rather than melting in. I did use a different product for introduction coat. But even then you would think the clear would bury it.

WOW!
Onto the OP, I wouldn’t think the dbc500 would have done it but I guess it’s possible. I do not have much experience with R-M so I can’t comment on the products you use but if the basecoat was too dry on the blend areas I could see it pinching on ya some. Does it have a grainy dirty look or just die back? What kind of gun are you spraying with? Have you ever checked your mil build? I have seen faster clears pinch on me if the milage wasn’t high enough. Kinda a fine line with faster products, too much will die on ya too.
I have used DC92 and wasn’t a fan, looked good but man I could run that stuff. If it looked heavy it was gone.:p
I would try waiting longer before clear and ditching the 500 first and see if that helps. With faster products it’s more important to have your basecoat flashed well. Jimmo may pop in here as he has alot of experience with the Diamont line.
