Always! The repair area shouldn’t have anything on it but the area of your blend will collect overspray. Make sure to tack off your paper too. I use the same towel that has my waterborne degreser and wipe off my paper.
AnonymousApril 29, 2009 at 4:40 pm #14131I usually tack every third coat & always before clear. I don’t know how much of a difference it makes, I haven’t ever done it another way. Well, I guess I have forgotten a time or two when i was in a rush to get the job finished, no big difference in cleanliness jumps out at me. How do your jobs tend to come out doing it this way?
I believe my jobs come out pretty clean considering I don’t have a booth.
Most dirt seems to come after spraying clear, but I was wondering.
I always see a few little circles when sanding the clear before buffing, just a few,
that are very light and sand out easily.
I’ve always wondered what causes them, I’ve always seen a few, even with
different products, a new compressor, different guns, etc.
I’ve noticed it on previous repairs by others too.
They’re not really fish eyes, they’re always just in the very top coat and very slight.
You can’t see them unless you’re sanding the clear.
Have any of you noticed this?Gots to tack! Haven’t you noticed all the over spray that wipes off?! It really is a must do. Also helps to blow
off the surface while tacking too. And the surrounding paper. With one tack cloth, you do several cars. I keep a plastic container nearby with a few.
April 29, 2009 at 8:11 pm #14139always just remember ta tac every square inch especially on met colors their is no reason not ta tac em of b4 clearing if ya got dust or base dust the clear dont stick as well 😉
i love tack rags…..when brushing i dont know what i would do without them fine detail would be near impossible without hardlining everything!…and yeah ive seen the circles your talking about i believe that is called ghosting or halo’ing you can see it when you seal certain things but when you get to the final stages base/clear normally its pretty suble to the eye

May 3, 2009 at 6:43 pm #14196Yep, I tack off everything.
I keep all my used tack cloths, and use them first in conjunction with a blower to clean down the area to be painted and the surrounding paper/plastic. I’ll then use a newish one over the panels whilst airing off with the gun.
I don’t usually tack off after my first medium coat (waterborne user here ;)), but will do after the wet coat, and again after my drop/control coat, just before clearing.
AnonymousMay 3, 2009 at 6:50 pm #14197BK, I was thinking of you yesterday when I was half-asleep and just started spraying my clear and forgot to tack. I definitely found more specs in the job. On my first coat I had quite a bit of little specs that went away after my second coat, but still overall there was a bit more then usual.
