I’m getting ready to turn an un-used bay in my shop into a paint booth and had some questions about the pit size requirements for a down draft set up.
I’d like to learn the math behind coming up with the exhaust pit size requirements, but if someone just wants to post an answer; the room that I’ll converting to a booth is 11’8″ wide, 33″ long, and has a 10 foot ceiling.
I was hoping to be able to keep the pit 12 inches deep or less, but my research thus far doesn’t agree with that.
I’m also curious about intake plenums, if they are necessary, and if so what kind of dimensions to use.
Thanks!
July 16, 2013 at 5:39 am #4365411 feet is not wide enough, your typical booth is 14w x 26 L 9 ft high. Not sure where you are but it is always cheaper to buy an existing used booth(eg.used crossflows are plentiful in my area for $2000 and up)by the time you buy the tubeaxil fans, lights and possibly an air makeup it is just not cost effective.Your average pit is usually 3 ft wide by 22 feet long,3.5ft deep. The pit will then branch off for another 10-15 ft towards the exhaust stack.
I think you might be better off making a crossflow or just buying one,a good tubeaxil fan is in the neighborhood of $1500…..I agree with Jayson. Looking for a used booth is typically very cost effective. Also a lot easier if you are getting it inspected…
And a26x14 booth is typical in size, but often more room would be better. I would consider 14′ wide the minimum. 14′ feet feels pretty narrow once you get a dually in there…
I’d have build another building to go any wider. The 11-12 feet is the width of the current structure. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to build something (or have the current one extended) so I was hoping to work with what I had.
However, it sounds like I might be better off saving pennies until I can either find a booth that can sit independent of a building outside, or I can afford to a booth and another structure at the same time.
