ha, my neighbor, the sikkens rep will tell you their stuff is the best on the planet. funny thing is i have never heard one person that uses it say it was any good.
August 14, 2009 at 9:43 am #15356Why are you fed up with it?I don’t mind it,I could think of worse things to spray.

August 15, 2009 at 8:23 pm #15370I used Sikkens for years. About 1.5 years ago our shop switched to Chromapremier. (supposed to be Spies but major jobber screw up) Between the two I would stick with Sikkens. Sikkens covers better and looks a little better. When we used it their variant system sucked. I have heard they have a new one which is pretty good. We ended up going with Cromax Pro because of coverage.
I think if you are spraying solvent there are better choices than Dupont or Sikkens. I would go with Spies or Standox (same thing) or BASF. I have not found anybody that has much negative to say about these brands.
And just for the record I like both Sikkens and Dupont so this is an unbiased opinion.
August 15, 2009 at 9:48 pm #15371I’m not really big on bashing paint brands,I have always thought a good painter can spray anything. With that being said I have sprayed ppg,a little bit of dupont,glasurit,diamont,ici,sikkens,u-tech,lesonal,and now autowave. They all have good and bad.As far as coeverage goes sikkens autobase plus covers fast, diamont, and glaso don’t cover as fast, same with ppg. There is a reason dupont came up with there value shade sealer, they know that chromabase is like painting with kool-aid.Having been a collision painter with close to 25 years experience,I have always been able to get a very good match with sikkens, even the odd butt match. The new variant decks are sprayed and similar to basf, easy to find the right variant.I think you just have to get used to what you are using, good and bad with every brand.

DuPont is overrated: poor color match and coverage.
After trying R-M Diamont, I’ll never spray DuPont BC again.
I’m sure Sikkens make quality refinish material, however they are not user friendly and they are
expensive. I’d rather use Glasurit for what Sikkens stuff cost.DuPont is overrated: poor color match and coverage.

The secrect to sikkens is to know(and remember) your air pressure on certain colors. VERY sensitive to air pressure changes. As long as you use the value shade system with dupont you’ll be fine. I use that system with every paint line I’ve sprayed. I figure if they can get dupont to cover the different shades of gray it should be easy to get a better covering paint to get to full hiding. Its six in one hand and half a dozen in the other.
August 22, 2009 at 4:28 am #15495I would probably stick with what you have!
One trick I used for blending it, I would do my blend with my first coat right after spraying my blending additive. I would then work my way back in. Seemed to work pretty well for me. It’s always a little harder to blend a basecoat that covers super quick.
